Default May, 2013: DARPA

Hi all...

This month we're focusing on Mechs for both 2D and 3D. For this category, however, your designs need to feel modern day and functional. For inspiration, think of the work that comes out of DARPA or Boston Dynamics, such as Big Dog and Petman. i.e. Functional robotics that have a modern military look and feel.

A great source of inspiration is the work of Vitaly Bulgarov: http://www.bulgarov.com/
He is an amazing talent to say the least!

This month's theme: DARPA

edit: winners announced!

Good Luck!
-Alex

Here is my submission for this months contest. I am really excited to see what everyone else posts. Its a very fun topic.

Modeled in Maya, rendered in Mental ray, composited and painted over in Photoshop.

No doubt that this is pro stuff, and a strong and good entry.

But I think it is a bit weak to put in an entry that is not made for the competition, but rather something you were lucky to have made, that fits the topic.
Would be more cool to see you come op with something new.
(But that is just my biased meaning ;-)

So the best of luck, regardless of what you choose to do.

Hi Nissen,

Here is a quote from Alex Alverez about the rules for the monthly contests.

For this contest it is perfectly fine to use work you already have... there are no expectations of people to produce new images exclusively for the contest.

Will there be honorable mentions? For now we'll stick to the rules set forth... four winners.

As far as if you can use 3D elements in a 2D image, that is also ok.

I wish I had the time to come up with a new entry every month but I am pretty busy. So I work on my own portfolio pieces from time to time and sometimes if I have some extra time in a month I create something completely new for the contest. The way I look at it, is its a way to test your work in a specific category against your peers. Just because I spent countless hours doing this work for myself doesn't make it any less meaningful. does it? The Warrior Cricket took me about 6 months, working on weekends a few times a month and some nights when my job would allow it. I am just following the rules of the contest and feel lucky to be able to submit something from time to time that fits the theme.

Wow, the robots by Vitaly Bulgarov are amazing, I watched only a few minutes of his time lapse he has posted on his blog and it's awesome watching him work.
Would love to join this month, not sure time will permit though.

Do not get me wrong, it is meaningful and a really good job.

And I know the rules, and as I said it is a personal thing (So in reality, I am the (one with a) problem;-), and it is not your entry that has any problems, but I am sure you can see what I mean.

Regardless of personal opinions, I still like your entry, and if people do not shape up (If you can say that), you are definitely among the winners at the end:-) and it would be well deserved.

Default DarpaHooverMine

Darn it, I wont have time to finish this, just got a lot of studying to do :/

So feel free to build on my idea, or take it completely;-P because Im out.
Ill cross my fingers for all of you, good luck and have fun.

The whole idea behind the mine, is that you can remote control it with a computer, and send it to the enemy, and then blow it op.
The explosives are inside those four cylinders which also includes a large amount of small metal peaces to do large amount of damage to humans, there is also some explosives placed inside where ever there is room.
The triangular/squares are armor, so if it gets shoot at, nothing happens.
It relies on speed, and the ability to move across almost all types of terrain, thanks to the hovercraft design.
Its about the size of a large Frisbee. 20Cm radius.

Default cricket

the whole issue aside, since its within rules, theres no point discussing it anyways....

for the cricket itself - having spent so much time on it (and without being pushed for a deadline) i would definitely love to see it in different leg positions, at least the thumbnails - seems a waste to not make a single render with its legs extended.

nice entry anyways.
