Default I'd like some critiques on my portfolio please :)

The title says it all.
Here is my online portfolio (link)
I will be getting a domain so the URL gets easier to remember.

I'm aiming to illustrate books. Particularly children's books
Which pieces are pulling my portfolio down and should be removed?
What should I focus more on for upcoming pieces?
I'd love to hear you critiques

Hi Valentina,

I like your site a lot. Simple and to the point. The only things I would suggest is maybe separating your work. If you are going for Children's books have a section for Children illustrations then a section on Monsters and Aliens. You may also want to put a bit more about your work experience in your about me section.

Nice site though Valentina and I really like your work

Thanks.
I heard pros and cons regarding sorting. I'll consider it and try to implement it

I don't currently have any work experience though. Kind of trying to land my first real job.

Lightbulb Considering your own Real Portfolio

The site was good, simple & clean.

BUT...

If you're going to get a real job, I suggest, work more to the book itself, which I mean; based on my experience; try to make your own graphic novel. Especially in illustration. Maybe you have a writer friend, it doesn't matter to collaborate as long as you're THE REAL DEAL with the illustration itself and become the REAL PORTFOLIO to get the jobs.

The site is good but not great enough because it's too empty, Valentina. (may I call you that?) Try to impress viewers by adding more graphic elements. Thumbnails are good enough but I strongly recommend you to do more 'eye candy' looks of it. Maybe using borders or such.

Above was totally my humbly opinion, whether it's a good critique or not... It's in your hand to decide.

Good luck on your journey, illustration artist!

Hmm.. kind of afraid more eye-candy would distract from the art it self, you know, once there is more of it. Ideally the site should get some more artwork within the next months, or realisticly the next few years. Maybe I shouldn't be as picky as to what is good enough to go up there. The hunter (yellow dragon) is probably the weakest there, but I included it because kids usually love it, and my best friend even has it printed on her wall. In love (the fly with the heart) might also be pretty weak, but I'm honestly not sure. (Just to make it clear. I'll still remove those pices if anyone suggests it).

I like the idea of my own graphic novel, maybe I can make some mock-up stories to illustrate (I don't have any creative friends).

Thank you, any opinions are much appreciated.
And of course you may call me Valentina

I mean, you could see this: http://victorior.blogspot.com/

It's well simple graphical elements added. Yeah, I know that you'll show off your characters in different ways. But I refer you to see that blogspot because it's simple accurate & also 'eye candy' for me.

For an artist that wants to become a specialist in illustration world (whether it's for children books or such), you have to be strong in heart not to say your creations are weak or so... I want you to achieve the better perspectives by showing your creatures more dramatically on the front page of site & also learn to love them first, so people would love your creations too.

Again, it's my humbly opinions. Because we... the artist should hold hands together, rite?

ooh, that's a nice site. Nice and simple, yet fulled with eye-candy

You have a good point there, HaYaTo. I'll definitly consider it
And I will most defenitly try to learn to love my own creations. Maybe not be so focused on what others may think of it to begin with I have a bit of a confidence issue, so I naturally think my things are weak and that people does not like it. But if I make sure I really like it, and then just see if others like it. That might be a better attitude.

Lightbulb

I have bad & black backgrounds about self-confidence issues back then, Valentina. Well, that's why I want to encourage others... especially people who have talents but not ready to show what's him/her got. I went through hell of it, seriously. But thank God... now I'm lighten up. There's still a hope for me after all.

Well... Talents are basically gift from God. Well, sorry for being religious. I just want to share my feelings & generosity about it. So, don't be afraid to show your arts. It's PRECIOUS. imagine, it's a GIFT from HEAVEN. And someday... some fine day, you will achieve what are you looking for from your talents.

I start to love your work, not just in the mouth or written here. It's from my heart, I'll share your website to my girlfriend & of course my friends.

Rise & shine, Valentina Rosalia D'Este! (sorry for write down your name here if you don't mind...)
