Default Stairway WIP

So I've decided to start a WIP thread for my entry which will essentially be stairs acting as vertical stitching to a city, weaving from the tops of buildings through the bottom of a surreal under-city. Different sizes, shapes, and general types will be found and used with a cut-away type image.

Here's the start of two of the levels, the subway (top) and sewers (bottom):

Lighting will play a MAJOR role.

I've decided to switch gears a bit, the main theme of being a vertical city stitching, but the city is going to be a bit more fantasy, it will make the links between different levels make more sense:

Here's some of the new start:

Right on, I was thinking about doing something like that. I.E. the castle in Return of the King. Should be fun to see how it turns out.

I've gone a bit in a different direction, localizing my city to a cliff-side. I've been working at an extremely slow pace too - I find the more 3D modeling I do at work, the less I can motivate myself to do at home.

Anyways, taking the same ideas as above for architecture, I'll be building across this cliff-side:

Just wish I wasn't running into computer limitations, unable to either render with displacements (relying on normals/standard bumps) and having a pretty low poly cliff itself.

Just need to pull it all together, the modeling of the city will be rather simple, and I have to take a pretty modular approach.

I sympathize with your plight, with the gears in my scene I'm pushing over 1.1 million tri's. Thankfully the building is done, just been playing with mental ray for the last week or so trying to get a certain effect, and have been having mixed results. In any case I'm looking forward to seeing this one realized, as the concept is fantastic!!
