Default Beorn WIP

Here are a few sketches that Iíve started out for a character concept of Beorn from J.R.R. Tolkienís The Hobbit. The job search continues and I thought would share some of the work Iím doing since I have a little more free time. The Hobbit was an amazing story and it had so many interesting characters. Beorn was one of those characters that just stood out to me and I thought it would be fun to do a character concept of him. Iím going to be painting him out over the next few days, feel free to comment and critique.

Default Establishing Thumbnails

I did some 15 min thumbs to establish a background setting today. Numbers 5, 7, and 8 are the ones that I think that I like the most. I think I like 5 the most, but I think 8 resembles The Carrock (the place where Beorn lived) the most from what I remember. I put an encroaching storm in a few to personify his ferocious side and of course the sun to highlight his more courteous and noble side.

I really love your concepts.

I do not know if you want us to pick our favourite elements but i got some

I like the left foreground element (trees) nr 4. and the right in nr. 3
i think they would combine great together with 8.

Keep up the fantastic work!

cheers,
Christian

Default Background Color Update

ChrRambow - Thank you very much! I agree with you about those elements. 8 was one of my favorites, but so was 5 and it won over due to input from several other people. But thank you you none the less, I very much appreciate the input.

Anyways, thought I should post an update on what Iíve done today. Didnít really get a chance to work on it Monday or Tuesday, but I got a few hours in today. As you can see I went with thumbnail number 5. The background is getting to a point where Iím happy with it. There are obviously some places I still need to finish up. (Foreground, lake, and a little more of everything else) Iím about to start on the characters and Iím pretty excited.

It's turning out great. I really would like to see the further progress on the characters.

ChrRambow - Ask and you shall receive

Sorry for not posting earlier, holidays, life and such. I have got the background in a state that I like. I'm thinking there are a few spots I may go back to get it to pop a little more.

As you can see, I've started on the characters as well. It feels really exposing to show your characters off in this stage. Not sure why because I've had art directors over my shoulder before while working. It definitely doesn't look awesome right now, but hopefully it will in the end!

Default Update: 02-15-09

Here's my update for today, I've been working all over the place with it. There's lots to do everywhere still. I've changed the pose of the bear for a more dynamic pose. Hopefully, I'll have more time to work on it tomorrow because this is a lot more fun to work on than looking for a job... but I need bacon too.
