Default Maya to Painter?

Hello all, I'm new to the site and am hoping to begin practicing with some of the tutorials here.

But I'm afraid I haven't done very much outside of pencil to paper, and I've become really interested in 3d modeling. What I wonder though, is can you build your own 3d model (say, of a human character) in maya, then export it to a program like Corel Painter for use in digital painting? I realize it will be 2d at that point, I just really like the idea of building a character in that way. Or perhaps does Maya itself have painting options that can match what you can do with a painter program?

Thanks!

Hey Falcor, welcome.

CG Talk or other digital art sites would be a great place to get those answers. This is really more a contest forum from what I gather. I'd love to use Maya and mental ray someday, or whatever is best.

Have you seen the book Cosmic Motors? If you want to see the full potential of 3D modeling it's amazing. Wow, Maya is incredible.
