January, 2014: Fire Elemental

Hi all... and happy new year!

This month's theme is to create a Fire Elemental... stemming off of last month's 3D theme. This can be set in an environment, or not... and scale is up to you. Could be a tiny little cute ember or a huge menacing magical creature emerging from a lake of lava. Up to you.

Basically a fire elemental unleashed from a jar/ urn.

hey heres my entry, ill give a bit of i guess of explanation to this concept, I wanted to do something different or see how far i could stretch the idea to point where people would understand its a fire elemental thing. Ok story- during the age of alchemy, a greek alchemist wanted to push things to the limits and so he sort to capture the very elements them self and use them to his will and so his first conquest was fire, and he was successful in this, after capturing the spirit of fire (which was a pure clean blue flame) he sealed it within a vessel/cage, but you cant control fire and so the fire elemental angry and confused set off a large explosion of fire destroying everything and everyone, and also killing the alchemist , and now Trapped forever in a caged "vessel" till the end of time wondering the grounds of the alchemist burned down home killing all who come close.

SO yeah was fun to do, Also all the entry's so far look sweet and very interesting concepts.

First post! This was a challenge for me, since I have focused so much on drawing characters last year, I was afraid this would take me ages to finish I wanted to take part in the highlands castle too but I just couldn't figure out what to paint, so before I knew what the next challenge was I already said to myself that if I could I would draw a creature again. I wanted the phoenix to look majestic and elegant, since from what I found the phoenix is mostly drawn as a falcon or eagle. The references I used for this painting were from peacocks, secretary birds, falcons, vulture and heron ( and some bird I don't know the name of ) I just wanted to do a different approach to something that has been drawn for many times already. This piece took me 9 days to finish and was much fun to do.

In the original sketch I did I drew the phoenix flying out of the lava into a starry sky but I already had that concept in the last two illustrations I did. Thats why I came up with the idea that the bird has been reborn again behind ornamental glass ready to fly away. Hope you guys like it! ( and sorry for the long post :P )
