I attended a sculpting course @CGtalk ( hosted by Katon Callaway) a couple of months ago in which you had to make a gamecharacter, retopo it and make it a gameready mesh, I have also bought a couple of dvd's here one made by Mark Dedecker and the other Cesar ( forgot his last name..sorry) called an introduction to charactermodeling and sculpting wrinkles and went blastin away in Zbrush.
I can tell you that during the learning experience in ZBrush I ended up a lot in what Ryan Kingslien calls the valley of the suck.
Nonetheless I finished my character ( took up a lot more time then I initially thought).
Well below is the result, I still need to do some texturing but I think you get the main jest
