Yeah, it's unfortunate that some forums are just not very active. I only just signed up here a few weeks ago, but I plan on helping out as much as I can. I'm not a Maya user, but I'll keep an eye out for questions in this section and offer advice if I can.

You can also use the mib_color_intensity node under Data Conversion. I had crashing problems too and this is what I did. Just plugged the luminance node into the mib_color_intensity node and then on you go. It would stand to reason that you could actually replace the luminance node with just the mib_color_intensity node. But I was trying to stay as close to what Alex was doing as I could. But the addition of that node worked and on I went.

Oh and connect the luminace nodes 'value' to the 'input' of the mib_color_intensity.

not that you needed confirmation, but I finally got around to checking this, and yes it also works.
