Default vfx help

Hello there, my name is Adam and I have a few questions for today.

So I've been watching a lot of movies that have tons of visual effects in them and that got me thinking. I find it really fascinating how they make these movies look so realistic. So as I continued watching the movies I had a clear idea of what was fake and what was real, but it was really hard for me to tell. Examples being in the scenery-when they add extra features to the terrain, like the mountains, or even the trees. How do they go about doing that, and are they just images cut from other photos and are later added in using the green screen, or is it re-created in those softwares like maya? Also how do they go about getting the actors to interact with the CG characters? I have a ton more questions, but I don't want to overwhelm you.

If there are any books/videos, that show how these sort of things are done in a detailed manner please let me know. Like a vfx break down video or smething that shows things in a more detailed fashion then what you find on youtube.

Thanks for the help
