I'm not a professional artist myself, but if you attend a university course or private school, often that knowledge and the connections you get there should be enough to be able to land a Junior position in the industry. Of course that depends on how much work you yourself put into learning and improving.
I think there's a general rule that it takes a human about 10000 hours to master a skill like 3D art.
So, depending on how much time you can put into learning and improving, anywhere from 1year to 99years is possible. I think 3-5 years of personal studying would be a good timeframe to shoot for, if you don't have access to a university/school and are working some daytime job.
