July, 2013: Sculpture / Photo Integration
1 Attachment(s)
Hi all,

So this month's theme is to design, model and integrate 10-20 foot tall public sculpture that can be either indoors or outdoors. This could be in the atrium of an office building, a park, etc. This will benefit from having a photo and a HDR shot at the location in the photo where you will be placing your sculpture. Judging will be based BOTH on the sculpture and the quality of the integration. The HDR/photo does not have to be something that you shot. i.e. you are welcome to look online for corresponding photos/HDRs.

The design of the sculpture is completely open. Anything from a figure to something abstract is acceptable.

Good Luck!

Awesome topic! I was just planning to do a 2D/3D shot, so this adds the extra inspiration. Thanks Alex!

Cool sculptures, Ehsan.

I am going to reshoot my photos tomorrow at a better location I found for my BG plate and HDRI. Then I need to finish my model and start UV and texturing. I'm going to need up the end date on this one. 07-24-2013 04:25 AM

This is my entry for this month.

I am calling my sculpture "The Aries of the Zia". It's an abstract Zia symbol with dual Aries horns extruding from the top; a mix of where I grew up and my sun sign in a masculine and feminine form.

I took the picture at a cathedral here in Honolulu (St. Andrews) using my Canon 20D with a Canon 10-22mm lens. I created the light probe using a chrome garden ball and then used Photomatix to unwrap the mirror ball into a flat HDRI. The model was created in Maya and rendered using Mental Ray. I discovered I could not get hard shadows from the HDRi on its own; so I had to add a light to help cast crisp shadows.

I hope you dig it. Good luck to all.

Park Sculpture

Finally I got some spare time to do some personal work. I loved the freedom of this topic and decided to give it a try.
Unfortunately, I didn't find the location I was hoping to find in time.
I wanted to put the sculpture in a abandoned storage and create a more mysterious and moody scene with lots of light action and so on..

I ended up with the park close to my job.
I shot a HDRI map using tripod and a 8mm . I think it was around 12 or 13 stops and 4 angels, I think It would worked with only 3 but to be sure I shot 4 angels, every 90 degree.

The sculpture is sculpted in Zbrush, rendered in Max with Vray, Mari for texturing.
It was comped in Nuke and photoshop for adding more texture details and adjusting minor things like removing people and so on.. I experimented with using Lightroom for the final touch.
I thought of it as a photo and I adjusted clarity, vibrancy and added some sharpening and I was surprised how well it worked. Definitively going use that again! Try it if you already haven't!

So here it is, and I hope you guys like it!

I live in Rhode Island and as some of you may know HP Lovecraft was from Providence. There's no better public sculpture than a Cthulu, and no better spot for it than the courtyard of the State House. I think I can get the city and the state to go for it.

I had a lot of fun shooting the HDR. It was close to 7pm, well after business hours, and no security or anyone to ask questions about it. I have an app on my android tablet that connects to my camera via USB and it handles all of the bracketed exposures. With all that tech I could have easily attracted attention but I guess I got lucky. I'm looking forward to doing more of these in the future.
