This is my entry for the current Blizzard art contest. I'm still new and learning, so this is my first massive project. No, I don't expect to win (although that Centiq 21 prize would be nice!), but it was fun and a major learning experience. While looking back, and considering it took 3 weeks to do the entire scene, I'm looking back and wishing I had applied some of the new things I have learned. But alas, if we did that, nothing would ever get done, right?

So, this is a good indication of where I am at now as a digital artist, so I'm definitely looking for critiques and comments on areas where I could improve. The image itself has a bit of post-processing after the render. The background blur and the snow were both photoshoped in, as well as the blood. The sky was also a photo composited in with photoshop. Any critiques are welcome!

Thanks for taking the time to look at this and thanks for any feedback!

Okay I'll get right to it:

So what is L5 about?

Imagine returning from an exhausting adventure only to find that your home is abandoned, empty. Not just your home, but your neighborhood, your city, in fact, everyone, everywhere, seems to be missing. This is what happens to the crew of the first manned mission to Barnard's Star - they return after awakening from suspended animation to find that their ship-board AI has sent them on a relativistic tour of the stellar neighborhood while they slumbered, dilating time so severely that nearly 200 years have passed on Earth. After coming to, they discover their vessel is adrift at LaGrange point 5, within visual range of a vast O'neill cylinder-colony. The night side of the Earth shows no lights, and no one answers their calls across all frequencies. They have no choice but to dock with the colony and explore its cavernous interior in the hopes of finding help. When they find the colony to be airless and devoid of life, the remains of human civilization baking in the Sun for decades, their predicament becomes even more dire. Following in the traditions of great legendary hard science fiction, their exploration of this relic of their own civilization will take them on a trans-humanistic and spiritual sojourn.

We are seeking both backers and talent!

So I am new to rigging/skinning. I'm also not interested in it as a focus, I just looked into it so I could pose my characters. I've only known how to do skeletons for a month, and just started to look into skinning deformations yesterday. I've been hacking it up to this point, rigging and posing a character then rescultping to make it all fit again (works as a hack for static poses, but would never work for animation).

I went through Carlo Sansonetti's rigging DVD, and went through some of his skinning one yesterday. Great information and I understood the concepts. In fact, I got them to work on a single mesh. But the problem is that I model all of my characters in multiple objects based on shader assignment (just like Alex for that matter). My problem comes when trying to skin a character built from multiple objects. The rig goes fine, the skin binding goes fine, but setting the weights is where I get lost.

One issue I had specifically was where a character I am working on now was wearing gauntlets and chainmail running just above her elbow. When modeling this, I left the hidden portion of the skin off, leaving just enough of her flesh to creep under the chainmail. So my problem comes when trying to set the skin weights for the pieces along the arm. Going with Carlo's technique of flooding the root and building up from there on each individual joint, I was running into the issue where when I would bend the arm, the arm and chainmail would move out of sync.

I have a general idea of how to handle this, but I'm an amateur at skinning, so I was wondering if there was any references or tutorials I could be pointed to that discuss sknning on characters built from multiple objects. Thanks in advance!
