...will 2D and 3D be judget separately this time? or is both judged together since the March contest, Alex? :-) Lemme'know......or should i say: let US know.....:D

I'll save Alex's time and answer this. 2D and 3D have always been judged together and since nothing else has been said, I guess that's what they'll do this month too.

This is a wonderful opportunity for us to grow as artists, 2d or 3d.
Thanks Alex.

i think it is an art contest all forms should be judged together traditional , 2d, 3d, sculpture, paper cut outs ect.... its about the art it is only recently that people started to look at art based on technique not the vision... and good luck everyone on this round

Alex Hdez.

I think that we have to focus on tryng to do our best, forget if the contest will be judge together, i think is not about competition, is about to improve our 2d or 3d skills, thats all....
sorry about my english:D
good luck every one.

Exactly. Plus, this is a great contest topic that will hopefully level the playing field between 3D and 2D artists. I'm really excited about this one. Good luck all!

yes I agree with Alex H also. No matter who wins and despite of judging methods, I'm happy becouse my skill grows and every month I'm very surprised by myself.

And what's important, Gnomon's DVDs can show you how do some stuff, but they'll not do all the practice for you. So contests are great opportunity to learn and experiment by yourself.

Sorry for language mistakes :)

Good luck to you all :)

(edited april 27 07) okay so I added some depth to the atmosphere, the whole image should read easier now. Click the link to see my full sized final submission. This 'Reasearch Lair' is done in CorelPainterIX. Good luck to everyone else! there are some really amazing peices up.

Basically what we have going on here is that evil looking fetus kind of thing:mad: is taking care of buisness in his secluded lair. You can see some of his drones there in the window, they seem a little lazy for clone workers but I like them and it kind of makes you wonder who is really in charge here. I had read an article about thought controlled robots a week before drawing this so I used that idea to come up with this vehicule that our villain:mad: can use to do repairs and what not in this low atmosphere future. Also threw in a robotic maintenance arm for good measure, another thought controlled device. Move your arm and it will respond accordingly, that is on tracks of course so it can carry say the jar our villain is floating in down to lower levels, we can only guess what weird experiments are taking place down there.
According to wikipedia 'alchemy was one of the main precursors of modern sciences' so there is some conflict with my futuristic setting. Regardless I see this whole process as alchemical, turning ideas into something tangible.

Oracle, have you checked that you have both the background and the bat image at the same resolution? That can lead to jaggies. Other than that, it would just be a case of cleaning up the edges of the bat wings. I had a look at the image and the finish the pen effect gives seems quite pixelated. You could try using bezier curves to shape the wings smoothly

Are true lines, drawn, not possible in digital programs (painter / photoshop / paint)?

I know that in Photoshop you can hold down the SHIFT key and draw straight up and down, left and right, or use the pen tool and use curves.

I would like to know how to draw lines the same as I can using the pen, but not have it create a shape.... its a pain in the ass.

You can get some nice line effects using inkscape, and it's free.

NathanS

I noticed the jaggies of the pen as I was doing the initial inking. I thought I had fixed it. I had the same problem with my post in last months competition image. I finally took one out of a Photo Jason provided and imported it to attain a straight line.

Are true lines, drawn, not possible in digital programs (painter / photoshop / paint)?

They are all the same resolution and pixel depth. This is my first attempt at doing an entire pic on computer. Other than the edges I am quite satisfied with the rest.

Thank you for your response.
when you use the pencil or some pen tools on a new layer you might knotice a little symbol next to the layers name turn red it means you cant put any white on that layer and it will give some tools bad interaction and youll get those jagged edges. to avoid this do a few quick lines with the pencil on a new layer copy them and paste them in as a new layer and you will be able to draw on that layer with the pencil and pen creating clearer lines. If thats not the problem try using different tools to draw the lines I favor the detail airbrush. At any rate you should be redrawing those edges when you paste in your new elements so you can play with an interaction with their surroundings so they dont look lik a collage.

tomstools
04-10-2007, 14:17 PM
@Pharion, there is an option in the top toolbar when you use the pen tool; there is a symbol of a filled square, then next to that a symbol of a square with a pen symbol through it. Click the latter to draw unfilled curves. Then you can draw your path and put a stroke on it for line weight. Cheers

I think you are starting your images at a to low of resolution. You can draw with whatever tool you want in painter a get a staight line. Unless the jitter is on of course. Also check your layer blending mode. If you draw with a pencil in painter on a layer that is above the canvas it will automatically go to "gel" if you paste your images together in photoshop it will switch that layer to "darken".

I did this drawing because I wanted to show that science is naturally occuring just like nature. In fact I would like to believe that most of science has occured due to nature. I believe that everything can be derived from nature, and that is what I tried to show in this drawing.

Your style is distinctive and I've grown to really appreciate it. The little child's face is adorable. Is she hooked to a machine or something? Your play with lighting is inspiring.

Can't wait for the story that goes with this.

Thank you very much! You words are kind as well as wise:) i cant wait to get some more time to work on it.

Where ever in time you are: Scientific Alchemical Lair. Many aboriginal societies believe and practice today that which has been passed down since the beginning of time. This Alchemist lives at the juncture of Oak Trees that have grown together so long their bases have grown together. Entrance is from within the branches, necessitating climbing down. Owl and bat co-habitate. You can see the representation of 'the Void of All That Is" at rear of the natural cavern created by the oak trunks. Owl and Bat settle to sleep the day. An aid to study placement of planets and stars stands abandoned to daylight.

I first spend a couple of hours laying out the scene in 3d (Maya), and then used a screenshot of this scene as the basis for my digital painting (Painter IX). I had never tried this technique before, but it worked out better then I expected. Also, the maincharacter in the scene was originally a watercolor charactersketch.

Great stuff as always here everyone. I did this mostly in Photoshop and Painter. I thought it would be fun to do my painting where you're the subject of the reasearch being done, with an alien being getting you ready for whatever it is he has planned for you, and you can see just enough in the surrounding room to know it's not going to be pleasant.

Nobody knows, a long time ago, Monux's citizens entrusted Nafton S. with the creation of the most appropriate pet for their planet.
The illustration shows the desk on his cellar, five minutes later he was taken to the Moncalvillo's Mental Hospital.
"Monuxies"came 3 weeks after that and took the "thing" on the tray to Monux, where the pet were brought to life... (Don't know what I am talking about?) (http://forums.thegnomonworkshop.com/showthread.php?t=527&page=10)

Done with photoshop (textures, some photos and a little bit of drawing).

I remember the blinding light and deafening boom, then falling to the ground? Somewhere between a conscious and dream like state, I heard yells, and screams.. then a smashing of glass. When I finally recovered from the shock, I looked up?.?

Stretching,

mountain winds touch delicate wisdom, listening deeply to whispering leaves rustle as shadow stalks away.

http://community.imaginefx.com/fxpose/christismellows_portfolio/images/27659/original.aspx In a galaxy far, far, away. In his Reasearch Lair, an Oracle resides. He looks but a baby, but is actually billions of years old, and is constantly pluged into a data flow that only his mind can handle. His knowledge so vast that he only shares it with beings far more advanced than humans.
Hope you like! Christ

4th Photoshop painting - WIP (attempt at speed painting) 3 hrs so far. Left Monochrome to give a gothic/evil feel.

Human Molecule Transport Experiment #75 - Failed due to 'extensive malformation'
"Another failure......... Destroy it, dispose of it, clean down the pad and we will try again in an hour."

hey thrall - yeah that's me. i wanted to add a little more story to that piece so i reworked it a bit. i know it pales in comparison to the other talented artists in that book but at least it was appropriate for this months topic. :D

cheers man, and great entries!

shoji: dude... you so far from the truth :P YOur stuff rocks, all the stuff in the book was really nice. I think its cool that you reworked a piece in order to learn and bring new life into it, ill have to try that some time.

On a side note, whats Scott Robertson like ? :P I never met him, but would like to meet him or be a student of his some day...
