Ok... here is the theme for March: Alien Pet.

cute, cuddly, menacing, playful, evil, friendly, unusual, animal, vegetable, feathered, slimy, floating, shy, curious, hyper, sleepy...

Good luck and have fun! :)

edit: winners announced!

So here are the winners for the March contest! Beautiful work all around... was a difficult judging for sure. Congratz!

http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/alex_stuff/misc_forum_posts/GW_mar2007_winners.jpg

Winners will be contacted via PM or email... or you can contact Lily Feliciano at GW:
lily@gnomon3d.com / 323-978-0800

Thank you to all who participated... Judging these contests is truly one of the highlights of my month! There is nothing I enjoy more than looking at great imagery, and this month was really superb. :)

is 3d and 2d will be judge seperately?
Alex mention
"as it is clear that while 2D artists can execute a finished piece in a matter of hours, 3D is an entirely different beast. While the February contest will follow the same rules, for March we will likely switch."

chandro: Yes, I know... but thats why I picked a theme that didn't give much of an advantage to the 2D artists... Thanks to Zbrush/Mudbox, I hope that we will see a lot of 3D entries this month! :)

So to clarify, yes, 2D + 3D are judged together....

im in. 3d.

get ready to welcome a very poor creature. aliens are NOT good pet holders, but i think its due to the lack of tamagotchis on their planet ;)

Ok since im in 3D for less then 3 month (self-teaching after works) and suck in texturing plus times running out. I decided to post anyway and to describe my idea behind it.

so this is a fishlike animal that just fits into his bowl. besides being a fish in a bowl is a drag this one has nothing to laugh. Really nothing.

To make him even more hating his life a pack of fish food is standing right in front of him.

the rest is.. i dont know. just realised that the comp is nearly over and i need a gnomon texturing dvd.

first one is the submission other one are different angles.

Im an avid Maya user. Learned it the Hard way by trial and error and still learning on my own. I was wondering for this contest do we post our 3D aliens in this thread or do you have another thread to post in? What dimentions do we post it up as? When is the deadline? Thank you for your time.

Hey all, First-Time poster, thought I'd give this contest a shot. I havent been modelling too long, and while looking for tutorials online I came across this site that has some impressive tutorial DVDs. So I decided to give it a shot and hopefully snag a DVD so I can learn even more about this wonderful world of 3D Graphics :) Hope you like it, Open to suggestions and comments.

Great entries everyone! Awesome image, Foxy. Between you and JakkaS from the 2d entries, it will be tough to decide a winner. Anyway, here's my first attempt:

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7820/alienpet01web01ya4.jpg

ZB + PS.

The concept is simply an alien petting a lifeform before abducting and placing it in a jar.

Wish I had access and knowledge of more highend soft like Max and vray. Bit of a bummer only being able to use ZB, and its "renderer". Must save more pennies. Or, better yet, learn to paint for real.

Anyway, thanks for looking.

Cecil Bienfang
03-26-2007, 17:39 PM
And here's my second entry:

http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/410/alienpet02web02ly7.jpg

The concept here is an alien egg crashes into a distant planet, and is gathered by a group of nasty beings living in the woods. When it hatches, and the alien closely resembles a chicken the disgusting woodbeings decide to raise it into a champion cock fighter, feeding it only gummy worms to make it fat and vicious. Here, we see it breaking away from its rusty chains, while leaping for its breakfast. Perhaps it will peck out the eyes of its persecutors. :D

The background clouds and trees, of course are a photograph, composited in photoshop. Everything else is made in ZBrush.

Thanks for looking at this one too.

Here is my pet.......There are a lot of great entries this month.

*edit* this entire line was missing: (I wish laptop makers would make a sliding cover to go over the touchpad when not in use) ..anyway - The image is based on a concept painting from Meli Hitchcock. I tried to make my own concept (50 sketches laying on my home office floor), but this one was stuck in my head and I just had to model it. BUT, I just had a creative moment in the car this morning on the way to work - so lets see if I can get it on CG before the 31st.

Time - several days
Software - Maya

Waugh,

 I saw your entry from last month too. You're ability to render photorealistic materials and lighting in 2d and 3d must have you grouped among some extremely elite artists. What gaming company do you work for? Valve?

Daddymack,

The expression on the pet is beautiful, and perfectly compliments the dynamic pose of the blue being.

joshhardy,

 Even if you only spent the weekend, I think your bulldog is also in the running for best in show. If you're still editing it, have you tried moving the spotlight to the creature's face and head, rather than it's abdomen?

Also, the creature's body texture is fairly constant, atm. Maybe some discoloration on its underside, or makings around its eyes and shoulders can break up the uniformity. Just my unqualified opinion. Please ignore with a vengeance if you're already satisfied with the image. :) Also is this a Modo render?

Gawd I wish I had more time to participate. Your entires have me inspired. Thank you for sharing.

Neon Nose Hair.. Much appreciated, I was trying to get a clear relationship communicated, I drew inspiration from my young daughter and the way she dominates our very powerful but submissive dog. Very glad to hear that it works for you:)

Well this looks more like a finished work so I think I can call it an Entry :)
Used Photoshop for the stars and glow.
My PC is slow so this one rendered for 5h :o

http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/4508/finalcopywm9.jpg

Oracle thanks alot for the comments :) and btw UV mapping is not that hard.
I'm not a pro but the way i do things is :
Add a checker map to the object, then select the faces of the part of the object that i want to map and decide how it will be best so i can paint on that part later in Photoshop, then decide the best projection for it ( planer, cyl., sphere and so on), then do a relax of the UV in the editor and place it on random location, then scale the UVs so that the checker pattern looks the same on the spot i'm mapping.
I repeat that for the entire object and i get all the parts with evenly spaced quads. After that i decide which parts to glue together so it will be easy to paint on them in Photoshop, and to do that i use the Move and Saw UVs and then do i relax again :)
Mapping all the parts takes time but compared to moving 100000 UVs with a single projection or auto projection it's totaly nothing :D

radialpulse
03-31-2007, 11:17 AM
Oh well it looks cute ;)
you did what you can with the time left and that's what's important and there's always the next challenge you can show your best work right? :) keep it up!

Neon Nose Hair
03-31-2007, 11:28 AM
joshhardy,

Looks tight! The render has a professional glow to it.

I know I feel like I'm never finished with anything I do, no matter how much work I put into it, and one change or addition makes me feel like I need a dozen more, LOL. :D With that in mind, I'd think, if you have the time, the transition from the floor to the chain is too even -- the links and the tiles seem to share the same value. Maybe mask off the links in photoshop and mess with their curves and levels. Also, did you change the teeth at all? They seem a bit softer or something. Maybe run the liquify tool in PS and nudge the tips more to a point.

Also, since I failed this month to actually finish an entry, please don't take my comments too critically. I simply enjoy examining great work, and seeing if there is any way to push it that much further, which you've definitely accomplished here. Just keep going until the last possible second. :D

So here's my entry for this month. You know how pet and owner often grow to look alike... ;)
I've been pushing myself quite a bit and fairly pleased with the result, it never gets perfect and I could keep on tweaking and fiddling with painting extra light for decades...in the end I removed most of it.
The medium is Zbrush with a dash of Painter (minimal), and there's a view of the pet from the top straight from Zbrush, no eyes there yet... ;)

Enjoy and good luck to all! :)

Phew!!! I really hope I made it! Put a lot of work into this still, I hope you like it. So this is my alien pet- cute in an ugly way, mischievous, playful, but basically friendly.

Thanks Mitko,

But from the looks of some of these entries I have my work cut out for me on the next contest. Hopefully I will have more time now that I am out of school.
Even if you don't win, allot of these images really inspire you to want to do better and I guess that is what it is all about.

Congrats to the winners ! :)

I just want to add that the true winners of such contests are we the noobs :)
Seeing such great artwork gets me inspired and willing to push my limits for the next contest !
40 DVDs is nothing compared to a guideline for what you can improve in your work :p
See you in next month contest :p

I have high respects to the judges because for sure, they are the authorities in the field but yeah I kinda agree with oracle, no elaboration needed.

Anyway, congrats to everyone for doing a great job! And waugh, I think you rock!
I liked zerorhythm's too. Thing is, you need to put up a finished work, man! ;) Hope to see you post your textured pet here someday. :)

Another job well done to everyone and to Alex! Respect.

It must be a hard job indeed, but all in all I think the selection was great... killer pets :D

I would imagine the judges have their own criteria, their own preferences just like everybody else does. I know I wouldn't want the task of having to choose a winner from all of these amazing artists.

For my part, I'm just appreciative that they are so willing to even offer such a contest. We're talking about $4000.00 in prizes here. The last thing I'm going to do is start challenging their rulings.

Better luck next time.

Hey everyone! Sitting here very shocked and excited right now!

First off... huge thanks to Alex for running this awesome contest and a very big congratulations to all participants. Everyone's work was so creative and personal... it was a delight to behold. My favorites had a sense of scale or told a story, two things which I regret not having time to include in my image.

Oracle: I agree with the late entry note... sorry about that. I think it was midnight PST when I posted, but I really have no idea what the rules are with respect to timezones!

But I think you are making an important point about last minute entries... this is a community forum contest, and it's a lot more sporting to post one's entry early so you can participate in critiques and give people a chance to see what you are upto. Ironically enough I was getting ready to post a version when I saw gregp's entry and I figured I had better go back to the beginning... :)

Thanks again to everyone and kudos!

Hi all...

Waugh! So here is the story... When I went through the threads and pulled all of the images, for some reason your image did not load and we never saw it! Only once I saw the comments about your image today that I looked through the thread and this time your image did load.... very cool indeed.

Since the judging is over I can't go and change placement, so I'd like to offer you a deserved prize... let's call it 7th place then and you can get a DVD. :)

email Lily Feliciano, lily@gnomon3d.com, and I will notify her of your win!

congratz again to all.

-Alex

A.Alvarez :)
Can't you guys build some rules for the postings of final images or something ?
This way it will be easy for you to hunt final images down and the problem of not displaying images will be evaded ?

Like in this bulgarian forum when you post a final image it is required to make an additional "code" or "quote" writing like this :

Artist name : Alex

Image : http://blabla.com/myimage.jpg
Software : Maya

Artist name : Alex

Image : http://blabla.com/myimage.jpg
Software : Maya

I see the "code" thing will not work good here :p

Ah well :)
Maby coloring a link or something :)
Figure it out :p

I tried to pm this to you Alex but you're full

Hi Alex, I just want to say thanks firstly for all you've done and continue doing for all who wish to learn cg  Cheers

Also, I noticed your post to waugh and just wanted to make sure that my image loaded and was judged among the others in the challenge as it was on the same page as his...

I'm definitely not after a prize, I just want to ensure that my entry was effective so that I know whether or not to use the same posting method next time...

Does this look familiar?

Again.. Humble thanks for all you do, your work reaches so many

Respect!

Wow, very cool of Alex to do that.

I thought alot of the posts this month were great, especially in the 3d forum. Also, what was really inspiring is that the posts that weren't so great still showed huge improvements. Congratulations to all who participated.

I think the amount of 3d submissions were much higher than normal this round because of the topic, I hope to see more subjects like this in that respect.

congrats to all... a didn't had time to make an image for march, but i'll try april!
this march contest had the best 3d entries... hope this calls more people to participate in the next chalenges!
However... i think that judging 3d and 2d artwork together is a litle unfair, the technics are too diferent!
but now i'm just waiting.... apryl theme:D ;apryl theme:D ;apryl theme:D .......
