Obviously this character is from Little Shop of Horrors. I drew a different version of this for an editorial cartoon last week. But it IS an alien pet, though.

I'll be providing another entry later in the month. Love this forum.

Just a little question, sorry if it's dumb; Are we to present this creature as a creature design, where the creature stands alone or can we include the owner in a more still-life-painting-ish way?

CubePusher

I don't think theres any hard and fast rules about how many entrys you can submit, i think 2 was more of a guideline than a rule. Although entering every work you've ever done would probably work against you.

Just a little question, sorry if it's dumb; Are we to present this creature as a creature design, where the creature stands alone or can we include the owner in a more still-life-painting-ish way?

You can present the creature anyway you see fit, some people will use the theme to create a standalone creature where others will try to depict a scene. The themes are nothing more than a base to jump from, as long as they maintain some aspect of what the theme is suppost to be you'll be okay.

A picture of Zombies crawling out of a grave for instance won't win you a valentine theme unless that Zombie happens to be carrying a card and a bunch of flowers.

Hey guys...

Here's my entry. I created this image for Mind Storm Lab's table-top RPG called "Alpha Omega" AND I thought if fit perfectly with this months challenge.

Basically the Allipede isn't fond of following it's masters (the Gornet) orders and is letting him know how unhappy he is about it.

Hope you like it!

All Photoshop...

I would incorporate more of the beast's eyes from the original. They seem better defined there.

The back of the beast is better outlined in the original, i.e. behind its collar.

Looks pretty sweet overall!

Here's my Alien pet. He's not finished yet. I'm hoping that posting it and allowing others to see it in it's unfinished state will help motivate me to actually finish it in time.

I'm still 'new' to digital painting, and having some color issues O_o but practice makes perfect right?

YES! That's excellent!

I like the muscle definition on the guy and the beast is coming alive nicely, good job on its mane!

How about the spikey bits on the collar? How about including a slight gleam off of the spikes to make them more metallic and pokey!

Oooh, and add some red splatters on the apron also!

Oooh2 ... I just caught the difference in the background ... coming along nicely!

HAH! He kind of reminds me of the gentleman rabbit guy from "Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends" ... Great expression! It's like he's going "Erm, what am I doing here? I think I just want to go back to my cage and finish off that carrot."

Great entries guys.

Here is my Alien Pet: Here is a bit of a back story.

The Hargoth is a docile, evolved dessert whale that feeds of desert cactus plants. Giant helium sacks fill his body, keeping him afloat. The Hargoth is also perfect for transporting large amounts of material and is used for that purpose by the Khui-Sun tribe?s men. This is the shorter version. Enjoy!:D

I have one quick question:
What size/resolution is the actual picture in PCS2?

Hi 130. Thanks about the entry.

The resolution is 300 ppi, and the dimensions are just under 8 X10. Since I created the image for this contest, I just winged it when it came to the dimensions. The psd file is 83MB. Why do you ask?

I'm trying to paint a creature every day. Just not to get too scattered with my images and links I'll show them all in this post.

...................................

Day one :
This is little Timmy! He's a speedpainting!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/IceyLord/alienpet1.jpg

...................................

Day two
This girl did a bad thing.. It pissed itself and now she's ashamed. She pisses a fluorescent blue color thing that is harmful for the environment...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/IceyLord/alienpet2.jpg

...................................

Day three
A new creature. Maybe this could be something like a fish...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/IceyLord/alienpet3.jpg

...................................

Day four
I tried a new thing... a new day a new pet...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/IceyLord/alienpet4.jpg

...................................

Day five
I had a lot of fun on this little guy! Here is the old fashion all kids' favourite pet!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/IceyLord/alienpet5.jpg

...................................

Day six
A new weirdo'
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/IceyLord/alienpet6.jpg

...................................

Day seven and eight
Well, i guess is only one concept for these two days.. It's a new idea i had, thought i could use - a pregnant alien.. I guess the masters could be some alien worms uglier than this one to care for a pet like this...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/IceyLord/alienpet7.jpg

Day nine and ten
This is my last pet!

For this I started thinking about what if your pet lived in your belly? I imagined for the pet that they function like this race's organs, in the sense that they digest food, clean out toxins, and in the process excrete chemicals that keep the host body alive. They are attracted to light, and are playful.....and truly this race's best friend.

These small creatures lives in the polar areas. They hunt for the creatures which lives under the snow surface. They are very calm but when they are in danger, they are jumping and shaking their heads and whole body...and then this red/white pattern on their chest looks like a big mouth full of sharp teeth.... Because of big funny red ears and big sad eyes they are very popular pets in the hunter's winter villages.

Hi Everyone,
Here is one of my entries for the Alien pet challenge.

This is an artist' rendering of a creature called the "Beardless Mung". A curious title in that the "Bearded Mung" has never been seen anywhere at anytime.(It should be noted that the creature was originally labeled the "Fuzzy Bull of the Sea" until it was observed that when placed, even in shallow water, they fell face forward and instantly drowned)

They give birth to 32,000 young, which they promptly eat. Occasionally a Mung infant gets caught in a skin fold where they remain hidden until mature enough to escape whereupon they develope an inexplicable fondness for cork.

They are trained as pets by a people called the "Nib-nib Mung akai" which roughly translated means "Those whose legs have been bitten off by the Mung"

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s136/penumbra_photo/Mung4.jpg

They are assumed to be loyal pets as there have never been any complaints.

Penumbra

Penumbra;

The "Beardless Mung" is unique, well drawn. This is absolutely a favorite. Quick question: Is this pencil, vine charcoal, conte' crayon. . . on paper, or Corel, Photoshop, or . . . ?

Well executed with any media.

Oracle

Hi Oracle,
Thanks for the kind words...in answer to your question, it is soft pencil done on cheap loseleaf sketch paper with a few highlight tweaks done in CS2 and Sketchbook pro. Its about 95% traditional and 5% digital.
Thanks again

These tiny pets, which are to be worn on the earlobe, have the amazing ability to read the mind of their host and whisper the answer to any question you may think of, or sing any song you may have ever heard. Although this may seem amazing, most people never get much more inquisitive than, do these pants make me look fat? Or, which is healthier, Dr. pepper or Mountain Dew? And as for the music lets just say these things spend a lot of time singing songs from American Idol. Its safe to say most of the processor power of these little guys will go greatly unused. Microsoft is still trying to fix the slime problem and once they have it figured out expect to see these buggers in malls everywhere.

Here is my second entry for this month. While I still may be making little changes here and there to this image in the next few days, this is basically it. Just didn't want to take the chance of getting busy and forgetting to post it before deadline.

Hi Again,
Here is another entry before its all over.

Here is a rare image of the "Spurious Dumf-Linger". So named after the first person to capture and train one successfully (Edgar Spurious Dumf-Linger).
These creatures are profound in their abilities to snif out their targets while providing a luminous trail to follow . They have a 99% success rate at tracking anything that leaves any sort of odor, unless it happens to be mating season. During that time the Dumf-Lingers can't be trusted to find anything but other Dumf-Lingers. They have also been known to attempt coupling with low wattage
light bulbs.

Well what can I say about this one ideas and ideas for the theme ALIEN PET. Well the story is simple, take the first left after Venus and u will reach the planet Iris-one, a really freaky place
Well what can I say about my little pets, each of the species in the fish tank have their own special characteristics, for example Nototodarus Dasyatis the big one in the tank with the glowing tentacles also known as the sea dancer. It attracts it's prey by glowing it's tentacles and u know how dumb the prey is, must go towards the light, and wham!!, its snaps its prey in it's glowing tentacles suffocates them and injects a deadly poison through needle like structure not visible to the human eye present in its tentacles. Then it slowly devours it's prey with the three rows of incisors presents in it's mouth.
Similarly each of the alien plants and animals present in the fish tank have their own special characteristics and boy trust me catching them was one pain in the a** :D .
Maybe on my next expedition to Iris one I will carry a camera and bring back of a few pictures of that place and also try to smuggle in a few more species as well, that also is a pain in the a**, forget customs and all we got the M.I.B to deal with here.
Could go on with characteristics of all the extraterrestrial life form present in my fish-tank but think, the forum page would run out of space:rolleyes:

Program used = Photoshop CS (burning dodging and lots of other stuff)
Actual Image size = 2200 x 925 (damn I lose out on a lot of detail minimizing this)

Best of luck to everyone

Hi Again,
I don't know how many I am allowed to post but I will probably stop with this one. I don't want to get on everybodies nerves.

Here is a rendering of an "Insanely Piosonous Disapproving Toe-Spitter (for kids). Also known as Expectorus Digitalis, they are prized pets valued for their ability to fetch needles and weave pasta.

The entire species was almost wiped out when, in an effort to domesticate them, scientist began removing the dangerous looking chin barb, believing it to be venom bearing. It was, in fact, their reproductive organ, thus giving rise to the "Disapproving" countenance.

Hi everybody,

I'm new in the forum and this is my first post.

This is the most popular pet on Monux.
They are good air-filters and everything that comes from them are at the same time very usefull and dangerous.
Children should not play with them when the pet?s eyes are green.
When they turn blue, you know the time has arrived to take them on a walk...

Damn, these few last entries are really cool...

Here is my second entry (not done in 100% but I don't have much time for this - this is my final)

These creatures are like "space rats" - they can live in any environment, they are smart, omnivorous and like long space travels :)
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/JakkaS/Alien-Pet-ver1_c.jpg

--------------------
These are my old paintings, but they fits to the topic - I did this for other activities and just wanted to share. I have lots of these, but I have choose just two of them.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/JakkaS/COW73-Hairy-Octopus_e.jpg

THE SUN
01.01.2070
"?all the rage, object of desire for extravagant women and half of the people in the show business, probably will go after it has ruined a New Year party organized by Ambassador Kitto and his wife 5 min before midnight... Meg Raynolds, the pop music superstar, came close to the sea food table and her wig-octopus suddenly woke up (when they have contact with the body temperature they fall into a sleep) and jumped onto the table to catch some shrimps. Few women started to panic, and others passed out... the situation became even worse when some gentlemen (after few? or even more drinks) wanted to help their partners..."
***
These octopusses were found in the year of 2069 near Antarctica. Probably they were hibernating in the ice until then. However, global warming reduced the ice surfaces and a few new species could be discovered by the scientist? and this is one of them.
? They live in the cold waters, feed with fishes and other small organisms they can find in their environment. They are covered with fur which gives them warm and help in mating. Males (usually they are more vivid then their females) lure the females with their colorful fur. The most interesting thing is that rarely there could be found males with the same color, structure and patterns on the fur.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/JakkaS/a222e49b.jpg

concept: Blofoor
This race was created by Karista, one of the most talented wizards of the city Alturag. The Blofoors are intelligent species, who can tell stories, riddles and tell what the future brings. They can't talk to people but they are telepaths. Karista was truly surprised that their creatures can so easily tell these stories. She didn't realised that she had created spiritualist creatures. Blofoors have three eyes. One eye can see the past, one can see the future and one can see only the present. That's why they are so talented. However, this talent was first noticed by the Lords of Alturag and then estimated as very dangerous. Finally made creatures and their creator doomed.

So first of all...who ever came over last weekend and let this little bugger out of his cage is gonna pay! I've been searching all over the house for him and I finally caught him eating my spare change BUSTED....not cool guys, thats my laundry money....

so the idea was to actually show the character as an alien pet IN his environment (at my apt desk, note the cute picture of us when I first got him =)) The shot was established to tell a little bit of story while you still see the creature design and his actions ...or reactions in this case

Good luck all, there are some very beautiful and well thought out submissions , the competition looks great! I had a lot of fun!

The image was created mostly in Painter with a few nudge and budge transforms in CS2

Hi Everyone,
Wow, the images coming in are really great. Here is my last post...no really.

The being depicted is a Shul-Kaddath (nods to H.P.L.). It collects the smaller, floating creatures, genetically alters them, then weaves its nervous system with theirs in order to use them as eyes, mouth etc. Think of them as living prosthetics. Eventually the prosthetics integrate and become a permenant part of the host (though they occasionally misbehave and have to be replaced).

well this is my entry , in the concept i was looking that the alien pet has the ability fo fly, then in the sketching and process i want to reflect something important: the loyalty and friendship of the pet and the owner.

Creating a scene of the pet and his owner traveling in the universe and planets , i show the process of how i get to this two characters and the final result. thx and it was a great time doing this.

That's why I did these two pets :D. I am still learning so any motivation to paint another creature or character is good. As u know: "the more you draw, the better you are". I'm not sure whether this belongs in the 2D or 3D section, she was sculpted in clay using John Brown's method (check out his DVD's, they're awesome! ) You can see what she looked like before I worked on the background and chain in the 2nd pic. This was my first time messing around in photoshop, it was really cool to add some atmosphere around her, using the two mediums of clay sculpture and digital painting was a new twist for me. Her color is the original color of the clay.

http://student-kmt.hku.nl/~daniel1/marty-the-meatbag_final.jpg

Marty the Meatbag and his Snifflings.

An Animal lover who loves his snifflings (an import breed from the dusty planets of Zandoid III, a planet with a soft wind that blows the scent of their baits into there huge piglike nostrils. Hunting with eyes is not something you can do with sand winds blowing with force, the snifflings skins are therefor very thick and are renewed every cycle of the planets sun. ).

But Marty loves his animals to be all natural and really admires their hunting skills and after all of the protests of the former powerforce left wing animal rights extremist group (people called them FISH after the head of the group was caught on camera eating fish, he admitted openly to the public in a popular talkshow that eating fish does not make you any less of a vegetarian. How interesting the story is we were talking about the snifflings ) you better make sure animals are treated as such or get forced into a reform programme.

Marty has got 4 Snifflings a male (left Sniffling in the picture)and a female (right Sniffling in the picture) and 2 young which gender will be determined by absolute randomness.

So the only way to raise his snifflings was to use the government issued feeding suit. The suit has several pads where the human scent is magnified with blood tubes running through the suits skin. When a Sniffling smells blood he will go for the pads, and bites down and thereby feeds itself. The only thing Marty has to do is run. The Sniffling does not see the difference from a normal prey and Marty, afterall evolution took away their sight. But even his Marty's love for his his Snifflings, he can't help but thinking back to the good old days when one only had to throw a goat into a Snifflings cage.

Hi all, great entries!
I choose to take a humorous take on this one heheh. I really had fun coming up with this one. I wanted the viewer to wonder, who really was the alien and who really was the pet. Yes, you can tell, but it makes you wonder how on earth that tiny alien is master over that big, beast of a pet?!
Anyways, thanks for doing this gnomon, im a big fan!

http://tedwork.com/Misc/morningstar.jpg

I designed this creature just for this contest. The "alien pet" theme got me thinking of the sort of great characters like "Gizmo" from Gremlins. I like the idea of staying away from glowing otherworldly forms and taking on the task of doing something that could be like a cat or dog if it just could be around for awhile. Something that is discovered (like "Tremors") or dropped off on earth ("E.T.") that is another animal just weird to us.

Anyway, I named this creature a "Morning Star" (another name for the devil) because a rancher might see a pack of these (their silhouettes) during a sun rise and say "It looks like a bunch of devils jumpin' around."

They secrete saliva from their hands to make mud balls to huck at each other (territorial) or at a predator (defense). They have a chest bone that is shaped like a turtle's underbelly. They tuck their head behind the top lip in or to still see but maybe take the impact of a mud clod.

They can curl up (tucking their limbs underneath) and still hear everything because they are essentially a large ear canal underneath that breast plate. It looks the same as if you look in a cat's ear. Wild shapes with some hair.

Their orifices point upward to avoid being filled with sand and dirt. Their mouths are surrounded by whiskers to the point of the black strands bunching together and looking like a horn.

Okay, that's all I can think of now. Hope you like it.

Ted.

Hi everyone! Here's my last minute contribution. This gigantic alien is raised by the major alien species to do some heavy duty work. It's senses have been improved by applying some cencors in his head which are attached to it's rather small brain. It's working abilities have also been improved by mounting a robotic arm in it's back. In nature this alien is a superb runner and a predator, but it's easily tamed with a brain surgery.

Here he is, my alien pet, sat in his cage. A peace loving creature as you can see. I spent approx a week from researching the design through to the final image. I wanted a a foetal glow and transparency to the alien, which proved the toughest part. I found the Neville Page rendering flesh dvd a good source of inspiration, as well as plenty of reference images. Enjoy!

I was a first timer here and can say the entries were superb...can't wait to see who's won!

Think I need to get learning the digital painting to have any hope of winning! don't think the old style 2D cuts the mustard!

Cheers and good luck to all!!!

I agree, Oly. My first time here as well, and if anything, it's taught me that I definitely need to work on my skills. A lot of inspiring talent and entries this month. I think it might be time to ramp up the 3D learning as well.

Best of luck to everyone who made the effort.

Cheers!

A.Alvarez- would it be possible to give the winners 20 DVD's and split the contest for 2D & 3D. I think it might be more appropriate to judge art in it's respective mediums. Just a thought.:D

tomstools

I would like to second that idea too. Until this month I always thought it was split between 2d/3d, I guess because the winners tended to be 2d work. It would be cool to have a split competition with smaller prizes, as both disciplines present slightly different challenges. The winners this month are great though, I dont dispute the decisions made. :)

This opens a whole can of worms, of course. I agree that they are different mediums, but then how stringent in the criteria do you want to get? Up until now, those presenting in 2D were allowed to use 3D elements. If you separate the two into two contests, some other questions are presented.

1) Can you still use 3D elements in your 2D images (structures, models, etc)? If it's 2D, then should it be strictly 2D?
2) Can you use photographic elements in your 2D images? A few entries made use of photographic pieces and backgrounds. Photography is a different medium as well.
3) Can those presenting in 3D use 2D elements (skies, textures, etc?), some of which are hand done, others are photographs.

The more you strip away the layers (pun intended), the more you divide it. Will there be grayscale and color categories as well?

It would just seem that 3D artists are going to be better at some topics and 2D artists will be better at others. Go back and look at the contests from previous months, and you'll see that overall, it looks pretty balanced. I think the Alien Pet was just one of those months where the 3D artists shone a little more and their talents produced the best images. BUT, need I point out the very impressive 2nd place image? Looks 2D to me.

Just as some artists are better at landscapes over characters, some topics are better for 3D artists, and some are better for 2D ones.

I'd be willing to concede being wrong on this, if somebody can point out where this logic is flawed.

Cheers.

I agree with a lot of those points, but in this context it would make sense to have two contests to fairly represent the mediums. The required hours to pull off a textured and lit model would outweigh that of a 2d piece, and vice versa depending on the subject. It is a tricky balance from Gnomons' point of view, but I think smaller prizes could work to spread the competion further.

im agree with mackstab, there should be judge 2D just with 2D and 3D with
3D, cuase both are different ways of expresion and different ways to work.

thx , and lets see whats on the next challenge congratz to the winners .

I believe the contest is fair in its current state. The object of the challenge is to successfully represent the proposed guidelines. The way which you go about it is up to you. This way it doesnt rule out someone's strength or weakness from overpowering or underpowering everyone's work in the final ranked representations. I believe everyone should open their eyes to what useful tools both mediums can be and not limit themselves to one or the other. I'd personally think I can benefit from learning more 3D and using it next time around.

So lets just follow the guidelines and have fun with it! We'll only grow as artists and be able to appreciate everyone's entries that much more. No need to argue to change the rules. :) I think the guys at gnomon have been nice to us already, lets keep the spirit alive!

I don't want this to snow-ball. I was just making a suggestion to the Gnomon people, no biggie. :)
I just have never competed in in contest that judges both 2D & 3D together, it seems like they should be judged separetely because they are diffrent mediums.
I just think that it would be more simple to judge.

I agree that it allows for a lot creative stuff to be mixed together. I don't dis-agree with the current judging.

Looking forward to the next challenge.

MackSztaba - I think you brought up something a good amount of peeps where thinking. It seems like it would be easier for the judges if 2D and 3D where seperate. In a production environment design and production rooms are typically seperate, it's just that there are concept designers that can pump out finished illustrations as concepts with the assistance of a 3D application and the 3D folks don't have the benefit of totally reworking their design last minute.

I guess my question would be what's the priority of these contests?... a good design or a typical design that is obvious and well rendered.

Participants should just keep both in their sites...I'm gonna look forward to the next one too.

Hi Everyone,
I am really honored to get 2nd place in a challenge with so many great entries. I, like many others here, am in an ongoing struggle to continue my artistic education and broaden my technical range. That being said, I am fine with being judged solely on content rather than technical process. In fact, that is how I had hoped the judging would be. Judging on content kinda makes the whole "Digital art vs. Traditional art" a moot topic. I think content should always be king. If its a good idea, its a good idea 3d or 2d. The 3d piece that took first place would have been a great 2d piece as well.

Its going to get increasingly difficult to distinguish between mediums as the digital realm evolves, but you guys (and girls) have some great ideas...those are hard to come by.

Thanks again for all the kindness.

Penumbra,

I'm just one opinion, but this is just like any other forum where people can post with their disagreements...I think you should have gotten first place judging solely on content. Yes, the 3d piece that took first place would have been a great 2d piece as well, but your 2d piece would have been a better 3d piece (it's just has more interesting forms and details, the potential for it's animation of character gesture is more exciting as well).

I sincerely thought that yours was the most successful solution before the judging so that's why I couldn't help with this response after your post.

I understand it's hard to be a judge in this situation, but that's what I think.

i think we need to look into the process of creation of the work. 2D and 3D are different and have different wways of working. 3D work involves a lot of work more that 2D and it involves a concept sketch also.

With that in consideration i feel 2D and 3D should be judged separately. That is not a hard task, right?

First off... this is Gnomon's contest... they can run it any way they want, y'all gotta live with it.

2ndly... an image, is an image... in the end, whether you've used line-art or 3D imagery the final image is FLAT. IF someone submitted an animated entry, then I could see the issue with it.

If people are concerned that a few 3Dcreated entries beat out some 2Dcreated images... maybe you need to get those 2D skills up to par? Bottom line... each image that won was A GREAT IMAGE... you can't argue that point. They won because of the ideas, composition and execution of their work. I think they are all very deserving.

Kudos to the winners... here's hoping all this whining doesn't detract from your win!

And... as always... thanks to Alex and the Gnomon team for such a great competition with such generous prizes.

Looking forward to April's!

Yeah...I don't think anyone is "whining" or "biting the hand that feeds them." It seems that we have been prompted to trade ideas about processes and what is valued as an end result or final image. I have a feeling that this is a big part of why these contests are being held...to promote conversation so a community might develop. I think everybody gets that things are up to the judges. It's okay to say something if you have a valid concern...nothing is distracting from the winners. Come on...it's a forum. Don't block this place from developing as a learning environment. I've read some very interesting points...hiskter brought up a good point about 3D people needing to do a sketch (there's a lot to consider). If there's anyone else hesitating to post, don't, lets hear it. Don't let yourselves be so easily offset. This conversation could help people decide where they belong in a production pipeline, so they can focus their portfolio on that.

Like i said before I DON"T WANT THIS TO SNOW-BALL!!!! Everyone has expressed their opinions and it's all good.

Let the art be judged as the Gnomon Judges see fit. And that's it. This discussion can go on forever, trust i've seen it on other forums!:D

Verithin- you don't need to make it seem like anyone is whining. This is called expressing your opinion. And anyone can do it freely.

LET THIS BE THE LAST POST IN THIS DISCUSSION.

and by the way: THANX to GNOMON for all they achieved "for us" . . .
i wouldn't want to know how things would look like if people like
alex, meats and everyone else @ gnomon....(.the list could go on and on...)
wouldn't exist.....

so let's definitely end this discussion and let's do what we all love most.....

Congratulations to all the winners, once again the talent that this contest has stirred up blows me away. The Gnomon Forum has grown immensely in a very short time and I am sure a major factor in that growth is due to Gnomon's generosity with the prizes offered at this very contest.

Keep up the great work,

Dan

I thought I'd add my feeling on the combined judging fiasco!

I came to this forum as a newbie and my first ever entry into the 2D section. I am a 2D artist and entered the 2D section. My question to GNOMON is why have two totaly seperate sections to post in when it is judged as one. Why not have just one section and post whatever medium you want. This made it look like two distinctly seperate competitions! I understand that this is GNOMONs comp and can do as they see fit but come on it needs to be much clearer than it is! This isn't sour grapes because I lost, as there were far superior 2D works entered and this post would have still been sent no matter what!

All I ask is play fair and give the community a fair chance!
