Ok, here we go... the February theme is the Lonely Outpost.
Desert, Mountain, Space, Moon, Canyon, Ocean, Goodluck!
edit: Winners announced!
Hello all...
So here are the winners for the Lonely Outpost!
There were so many super cool images, but in the end these six entries stood out for their impact, atmosphere, clarity of vision and, of course, interpretation. The effort put forth by everyone here is truly inspiring.

Nice forum guys, feels comfy - recognize a lot of the names here too.
Here are some things I've been up to the past few days; playing with centralized compositions, you might notice a repeating element or two ;)

These are my submissions for the lonely outposts. I added one with me in it because this is my lonely outpost. I also added two reference images for my loneliness piece. Those are two images I used to make that piece. I did all the photographs, and drawing myself.

Hi all:
heres a few of my concept studies to throw in the mix.
all based on the idea of a remote outpost of sorts, although a couple of them arent all that solitary :-)
wish i had more time to work on this months challenge, but off on holiday tomorrow.....best of luck to all.

p.s. Does anyone know a free image host that will handle images larger than 800x600, photobucket has a limit I guess and the lower res is killing the details in my image. I attached a higher res jpeg as well.

Wow! this month has some seriously amazing work. I better start matte painting or I'm going to be left in the dust.
When I read the title "Lonely Outpost", the first thing that came to mind was a guy on a gun turret getting wasted. Maybe because all the lonely people I know happen to be alcoholics.. lol
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m194/affinity2k2/lonelyoutpostdrunkfinishedweb.jpg
This second piece was kind of a happy accident. I was experimenting with the Scott Robertson marker technique and fell right into this painting. I will say if your
at a loss for idea's, his way to find unique environments is a blast. I don't think I would have ever just sat down to paint this. I had to search through my own marker chaos to find it and when i did I knew exactly where to take it.

The guys that work 3D in the movies often say, "I love when people point out how badly a 3D object or scene is done, and it actually is real stuff and not digital at all".
In this case the same happens :D The sky is a full photo image, apart from the right side that was painted by myself ( from the tower to the right side ). There was no blending at all :) !!
Yet this brings out an interesting subject: "When is the representation of reality more real than reality itself?"
I believe the answer would be related to our cultural and visual knowledge. For example we accept Lord of the Rings or King Kong landscapes has real places, even with all those colors and sentimental charge.
Kind regards,
Ricardo

Ya it is funny how different people percieve things!! Your piece looks fine to me and the crit I posted earlier was extremely nitpicky!! Your right, the fantasy element of LOTR and King Kong allow our suspension of disbelief so stuff like that becomes pluasible.

Well Im really excited about this contest. I haven't entered before, I just like to come and look at the amazing entries, but that prize is a huge incentive for a student thats out of pocket. So, I decided to give this one a try. I've been working on it for about 3 weeks now, and hope to finish and post it in a little while.
Here is my concept. Its going to be a matte painting by the way:

Ok, so im finished after about 25r or so hours of enjoyable labour :)
Im pretty happy with it. I can sense there are issues but I think I just have to accept that with my current knowledge (or lack thereof) I have to leave it as it is. I got a lot out of the process so it was well worth doing.
Here it is then, my entry:

Slivar: The Gnomon DVD's work with Region 2. I think that region stuff is no longer very important, because all regions work in our computer DVD players.
Some Gnomon DVD's are not even done for DVD players, meaning they are not DVD movies but DVD-Roms.
No matter what, Gnomon DVD's rule!
I love the Mark Goerner stuff, and Wendy Froud is the best teacher they got so far. She is very amusing and for the first time I didn't slept while watching a Gnomon DVD. :D
Nick: "Ricardo, that is a beautiful piece of work, congrats! I was secretly hoping you wouldn't enter, lol."
Hi man! nice to see you here. Thanks for the comment. I like your entry too, the landscape is very well done, but I think you still could improve the outpost. Why don't you sketch one up in 3D with Sketchup, and blend it with the landscape?
Sketchup is really easy to use, and you have a free version online that could do the trick. Let me know if you need anything from me, I am very glad if I can help.

Ricardo - Thanks for the compliments, Im glad you liked it. I agree about the outpost. I actually did this as a really basic and quick 3D render in XSI, then drew over it and textured it in Photoshop, but I do feel something is lacking. Is there a way to easily get the right perspective on a 3D model to match it to your scene, coz that was one thing that took me a few tries until I was happy. I actually think i didn't do the outpost justice coz i highly detailed it, but its too small to see in my matte. Is there anything in particular that you think needs to be better with the outpost? Thanks for your help, i appreciate the support!
Nick
p.s. Im glad you gave the Mar Goerner dvds the thumbs up, coz Im going to buy those when I have saved up the money! They look amazing!

Hi Nick!
Yes there is a quick way to match the perspective. You can draw the perspective lines over the matte paint on Photoshop, then import the image into your 3D application and adjust the view making sure the usual application grid matches the perspective lines on your image.
After that you can either replace the image with another one without the lines and render the geometry with the image as background, or you can render the geometry alone and blend it in photoshop ( better process ).
At some point you might create a camera in the position you will need for rendering the image, if you plan to keep adding detail to your object, not to mention that if you have a side chosen, you don't need detail where the camera doesn't reach.
The size you have chosen for the image, doesn't help you much for a detailed outpost, but you could for instance make the outpost tower higher and it would come out from the tree line some more, making it more visible.
Or you can make a clearing around the outpost, so the house would be better seen.
Mark Goerner is a Master! seeing him sketching interior spaces makes you drool :D
It was one of the first DVD's I bought from Gnomon. The other was Dusso v2.
But heck, I recommend all of them.
Suirebit
02-24-2007, 05:11 AM
i also recommend dylan cole :D
about perspective...there is a tool in cs which can help you sometimes...vanishing point ;)
And i agree with Ricardo's comments, Nick! The size/scale/perspective of the outpost simply doesn't do it justice :)

ok thanks guys :)
Yea I tried to be very careful with my perspective when doing the matte painting. I always have my perspective grid as my top layer that I can keep flicking on and off to check myself. I will have to try importing the photoshop image into my 3D app, coz i hadn't thought of that. Im very new to 3D so my skills are lacking, but i'll give it a try.
The main thing I was worried about with the outpost was that it was going to be a major selling point on the scale of the landscape, which I wanted to seem massive, but I like the idea about making it taller or clearing around it. I might do more work on the flames too so that it becomes more of a focal point. I wasn't sure exactly what the deadline date was, and I can't work on it over this weekend as Im visiting family, so i wanted to make sure I had it in on time. Hopefully I can do some more work on it on Monday and still submit it in time :)
Dusso and Mark Goerner are two dvds that I really really want! They look awesome! I have the Dylan Cole dvds and one by Feng Zhu, and the quality of those is outstanding! I hope I can keep adding to that over time.
Does anyone know what day the dealine is? I saw the 28th mentioned, can anyone confirm that? Also, when do the contest results usually get released?
Thanks for the help guys, its very much appreciated!

Nick, the deadline is at the end of the month so yes, 28.
Try focusing the picture onto the outpost, right now it's not the subject of the image.

Thanks Suirebit. I think you hit the nail on the head there. I just need to make it more of a focal point. At the moment it looks like an add on, not the centre of interest. I will definitely do some alterations for the deadline.... man i forgot February was so short... :)

And i have to say in future i'll be checking out what other people are doing before i decide whether or not to bother...i mean how many of these works could easily be an imagineFX feature? that goes double for yoshi mazaki....dude should be making a gnomon tutorial dvd nevermind entering a comp to win some. :p

Not mine for sure. The guys at ImagineFX don't like me, they don't reply to my emails, they don't follow my advice on the forums, and they still haven't sent me the "Star Letter" prize from May 2006.
I tried to reach them several times to different emails. They don't care. So, next month it will be my last issue in the subscription I made with them, and I will not renew it, although I said I would even with such treatment from their side. But that was before I realized the price of 2D Artist in comparison, and 2DA even has the feature of not taking space in my shelves where I need it for books... and Gnomon DVD's :)
Take care.

All in all, intimidatingly great stuff in this thread.
I'm new to 2D, have been making 3D for many years, and this challenge is a great motivator to get working!
I've already received help from a Ryan Church DVD to create this image, which is a picture that popped into my head when I saw this months theme.
Upon making it the idea grew and came to be "Not all is lost"...a sort of love story ;)
Feedback is greatly appreciated!

Well what can I say about this one this is the first time I have painted a landscape in Photoshop. Well I have tried to show an abode in the middle of the mountains, I choose snow and did not paint just a green scenery as I think cold environments and loneliness go hand in hand with each other atleast thats the way I feel. Now this is really not my project that I wanted to submit for this theme but unfourtunately we are in the month of Feb and it ain't a freaking leap year to top things off  so this is kind of a hurry hurry job, just wanted to participate and I guess I will have to pray to win this one:D I actually even uploaded the image in the wrong forum by mistake. The project I really wanted to submit is still in the process of completion. So lets see what can be done
Well I think all the submissions were great and may the best man win, and that ain't me for sure not with this one atleast hey thats the way I feel

Well I decided that the advice I got on my entry was just too good to pass up. I felt that my outpost was letting the landscape down too, so for other people to say the same thing forced me back to XSI to model a better outpost. I spent more time this time and sketched up a few designs based on pagodas from China and Japan. Im much happier now, and this will bne my final entry:

Hey everyone,
Here is my entry for the Gnomon Workshop "lonely outpost" challenge. Been working on it non stop since the challenge was announced and I think this is my best work so far so I am happy :D
The Idea is that this is a lighthouse from another world. And is over run by a vulture like creature that are scavengers feeding off any life they can find.
I think a light house is a great example of a lonely outpost. Most lighthouses are run by one person who is usually alone and 100's of miles away from anyone else and are known to either go insane or kill themselves. So I wanted a very dark creepy atmosphere full of odd shapes and color. A place that if you had to go there and work, you would feel like not even god would be with you.

I usually take my magazine there as well. LOL
It's a shame they offer stuff and make contests and in the end fail to comply. I had the idea that British people were very correct... it seems not all of them are after all.
I am still wondering who won the Cintiq they were giving in March 2006.... I guess they kept it for themselves.
Last issue I decided to count the pages and check if I was making a good investment or not. I realized that over 30 pages were trash. They have the magazine full of indexes and summaries, plus subscription ads multiplied by 3 or 4.
The other 100 pages or so, were divided between a couple of tutorials and news.
Maybe the fault is mine, because I have internet and I have access to all the same information online, but truth be told, one year has passed from their creation and they are starting to became uninteresting.
It's a shame... they started so well, maybe Rob would like to read these lines, since he apparently doesn't get my emails.
Nice job everyone. This month the competition was amazing, there are a lot of good works that deserved to have prizes. I hope Alex does like he did in December when he decided to extend the prize numbers.

Anyway, here's my entry for this month. It's going to serve as a banner for a website, which explains the rather wide dimensions. But I thought it fit the theme rather well. It's my first attempt ever at a matter painting (I used about a dozen or so photographs and a partial 3D model of the tower), and I'm reasonably pleased with the outcome. Still, it would have been great to have those Dylan Cole DVDs to guide me along (hehe).

Here comes my entry. It was inspired by Gibsons "Graf Zero" book. My lonely outpost is a securing one...far on the east, protecting Hosaki corporation top secret inventions. Although i wasnt sure in what year Gibsons book is taking place in, i decided to keep it look really close to our time...Another aim i set for mysealf, was to keep this painting look natural, with palette similar to usual photo..

This one basically shows an abandoned village wherein everyone has left the outpost and Mother Nature and time have played its role, on the village. I tried to depict a dull atmosphere of solitude and sadness in this picture. The real project that I was working on for this theme was (Native american Outpost), but due to unforeseen reasons I could not finish that before the given time, think I submitted this also in the nick of time. ANyways I think it is kind of different from all the other pieces of magnificent artwork that have been put up for this competition
Actual Size 1024x786
Best of luck
Thank You

Hi all, if you guys have trouble with compression on your pics, you could try the 'File>save for web' option in Photoshop. That is the method I use for getting stuff onto my CG Society page and Gnomon, and it works pretty well. You can pick a target file size and it will calculate the compression without physically shrinking the image. You can leave your image at 1000px or so, save for web, then use the image code from whichever image host you use.

Oracle - Thank you for your nice comments my friend. In terms of your image problem, have you tired picturetrail.com? Its free to create an account and you can upload your images there and get the tags. It does automatically compress your images, so it might not solve the problem you are having, but you can set what size the image is compressed to (small, medium or large). What did you think of the quality of my post? That was saved as a jpeg at 1000px wide, and thats how it looks after being uploaded to picturetrail.
Hope that helps in some way.

The saying goes speed thrill but kills I guess that is true in case of designers as well. I was a victim to that very saying. I just wanted to participate in this prestigious competition with some of the best of the best. I even ended up posting my image in the wrong forum in the competition rules forum by mistake. Well cold solitude the first one was a hurry hurry job just painted in Photoshop. I could not find a better way to show a lonely outpost. Just a small red cabin which u can see in the contest rule forum(where I posted my big image by mistake) smudge out cause Mother nature has played its part on it located in the middle of nowhere, not a soul in sight, no futuristic gizmos nothing pure solitude. I think the name of this digital design itself tell u a lot. The next one Exodus is traditional acrylic paint on canvas manipulated in Photoshop, all is over and everyone has left and Mother Nature again has played its role as u could make out from the tree in the background. The way I wanted to show a lonely outpost was an abandoned place or a place in the middle of nowhere, the pure form of loneliness. (not a creature in sight)
The actual project that I wanted to submit for this project was a high definition paint job in Photoshop shop, showing an Native Indian outpost and the chiefs skeleton but unfortunately due to lack of time and a virus I could not finish this project of mine, I reached the tippi?s but then pc problems and the time was really not my best friend.
Well I know I am not that good but, I must be honest and tell you I have never got to see so much upcoming talent in one site. I have seen some of the best technical and creative work on the submissions on this site.. For the lonely outpost I personally liked the one which was a futuristic outpost and the man through the various seasons it was nice sweet and simple, and math?s lighthouse, well they do say it?s another World out their, I liked the artwork.
Anyways best of luck to all of the participants they were all good.
Thanking You

The pdf can look better than the jpeg if the pdf is using a different compression type( could be set to .tiff) otherwise it should look similar because I beleive pdf uses jpeg compression for bitmaps. Is the pdf bigger file size wise? Not sure about the issue of the image not showing up based on your login status. I would stilllink a jpeg, just adjust it photoshop etc... in order to match it to the original.

Hey thanks for the relpy,
However, the problem, is that on one comp (mine) the psd looks differnt from the jpg, alot. I will save as jpg, and then open jpg right next to psd file, huge differnce. So because, the jpg looks different, when ever i adjust the psd, it looks differnt in the jpg...
I dont understand why there is such a difference, ill post the two in a bit, its not slight at all...
Thanks

My images are also appearing and disappearing without reason.
Maybe there is a net split somewhere. It sometimes happen, that's why it's better to upload your images to servers near your viewers or customers ( if that apply ), otherwise if a Net Split occurs, you see nothing :)
I have posted three different url's for my picture in my entry post. If by any chance it fails to be seen by the jury... heck it was a great contest, and I loved every bit!
Best luck to all,
Kind regards,
Ricardo.

Umm. don't adjust the psd. Open the jpeg and the psd next to each other...then adjust the jpeg until you get the best match. Is it the color and contrast that look different? When you save as a jpeg it will look a little different because of the compression, usually less contrast and color intensity, plus some image artifacts depending on the compression level. If you use jpeg, there will be some compromise in quality versus file size. Thats all I got!! Maybe an expert can chime in!!;)

Well I think your images are only being shown when logged in because you did an attachment rather than actually posting it in the message. I think that may be what it is anyway. If you click on the little 'Insert Image' button next to the hyperlinking options, as long as you have your image uploaded to a host, you can just post the URL of the image into the pop-up box and it will post the image straight into your post, rather than as an attachment. I hope that makes sense?
I might be wrong about why the images aren't showing in your posts anyway, but thats the only reason I can think.
Ricardo - your image is a bit more perplexing, coz sometimes I can marvel at it and sometimes i get the little red 'x'. It would be a severe injustice if your entry wasn't seen...
Oracle - Thank you very much for you kind words :) Its a big boost for me to see that you like it! I still haven't done lots of this kind of thing, but its something I love doing, so hopefully I will keep improving as time goes on. If you were serious about your friends wanting to use the image as a desktop, I would be extremely flattered for you to use it, it would not be demeaning in the slightest! I could send you the jpeg at full size if you wanted?
Grea to see those last minute entries everyone, some amazing talent on here. Very humbling.

Congratulations to all, especially Matt Ellis and frenzied (the only 3d entry to win).
Any chance you can post a tutorial of your process in photoshop, Matt? Especially how to paint the water and feathers? Your entry is one of the best pieces of CG work I've ever seen. Really amazing, brilliant work. One day, we'll see you walking up with the Weta or ILM crew to accept an Oscar. Hopefully.
Again, amazing work and congratulations!
Oh, and unless it's against the rules, I for one vote for some sort of Masters competition, Like ConceptArt.org does with their Last Man Standing Comp. It would be AWESOME to watch Matt Ellis take on Mike Corriero, Alex Keizer, and the winners from all the previous months. These guys kick ass, and I'd love to see them throw down against each other. Maybe, since they've already won the big DVD enchilada, Gnomon can give away a computer or new software of something. Just to make it worth their while.
Plus, maybe each could post some step by steps or work with Gnomon to produce some DVD's of their own. Those would definitely be something I'd be interested in purchasing.
Anyway, great job Matt, and hopefully you're allowed to enter again. It's sort of a bummer that none of the previous winners have ever posted anything again. :( Maybe they've all been gobbled up by Hollywood studios (they certainly deserve to be). Great work Gnomon on getting so many amazing artists good jobs.

Yes, it was quite difficult to select the winners, but we really tried to focus on the theme and let that dictate the results. There were many many cool images, but several of them didn't quite feel 'lonely' or like an 'outpost' to us... But again I want to thank everyone for participating as it was a real pleasure to experience everyone's interpretation of the theme.
