Hey everyone,
I am new to the CG environment and I recently bought the Polygon Modeling 101 for Maya and Introduction to Zbrush. I have been working on these DVDS and they are great. I was wondering what DVD i should go for next because I want to learn how to Texture my objects and render them in maya. Any help would be greatly appreciated on what to pick out!! Thanks again everyone!!!!!!!

Hey there!
So you want to texture? Cool :-) It seems rather logical to check out the Texture Painting for maya, here's the link to the first DVD:
http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/pca01.html
I'm not a maya person to be honest, but as far as i have read, you'll learn how to texture some pretty complex stuff, i ex. the human face.
Hope i helped you out.
Best Regards, Vicco
P.S. Next time you might want to create a topic somewhere else than in the 3D competition Thread

If you like Zbrush, you should look into getting Meats' second DVD (the Zbrush Maya Pipeline one). I can't remember how much UV Mapping he goes into but it's a really good lecture on rendering your ZBrush creations in Maya.
*EDIT Sorry, you asked about texturing not UV mapping. I haven't seen the Ian Joyner Texture DVD but it looks amazing.

Yeah the Ian Joyner DVD is quite good i must say (Though it's for 3Ds Max). Both the modelling and texturing that is... The only downs with it is that he uses so many plugins and other applications to get things right. This can be quite annoying at times. But overall it's very interesting and he gives insight to a lot of tips and tricks.

Whats the difference between UV mapping and texturing... because I want to be able to apply a texture and a material then add lights and render it and get a final product. So which one should I learn first? Thanks

UV mapping is when UVsnapshot your UVs and texture it via photoshop etc. while texturing just adding the material(Blinn, lambert,Phong etc)or plug an image to your model w/o uv mapping it. It depends on your model if you want to UV map it or just put materials.

I strongly Recommend UV mapping. Just adding a material to an object isn't very difficult to be honest. You'll see, UV mapping is very important to know if you want to make realistic objects.

A texture map is an image wrapped around a model. This can include many elements, from diffuse maps, to bump maps, to reflection maps and so on. You make them by importing images made in 2d based programs such as photoshop/painter or directly from photos. UV mapping is the process of assigning how a texture map will wrap around your model(s). Most of the time I just refer to both as texturing a model.
It might be a good idea to learn about UV mapping first, so that your textures will wrap better from the beginning. If you're more concerned with just getting some color onto your models and getting right into rendering, you may want to skip heavy discussions on UV mapping for later. Ultimately, if you want to make highly detailed/beautiful models, you'll need to master both aspects.

You need to learn UV mapping before you can texture Poly or SubD objects. UVs determine how a texture wraps over a poly object, and they are not defined automatically.
I highly recommend watching Sean Mills UV DVDs... they are very well done. Once you understand UVs in Maya, you can then pick up some cool workflow alternatives by watching Ian or Laurent's Max DVDs. Even though they are with Max, the techniques apply to Maya.
NURBS surfaces, however, have implicit UVs and can be immediately textured.

Well, i'd rather post it on CGtalk since i dont really see a WIP thread anywhere here. But who knows, maybe Alex Alvarez will open one in the near future?
Cheers, Vicco
