View Full Version : December, 2006: Winter Treehouse
A.Alvarez

Ok, time for the December contest...
The theme this month is to design a treehouse in winter... this is of course open ended as far as the type of 'house' and the type of tree, but I got the idea from this book that I recently found:
http://www.amazon.com/Treehouse-Book-Peter-Nelson/dp/0789304112/sr=8-2/qid=1165383231/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/103-6420476-0939816?ie=UTF8&s=books
Now this can be a single house in a tree, a village in a bunch of trees (treetown), etc.
For those doing 3D, the best resources for building trees as a start point/reference are OnyxTreePro, Vue, Xfrog or Maya Paint Effects... Plus Ethan Summers did a cool paintfx DVD where he shows how to start with a PaintFX tree and then refine it using zbrush.
good luck!
edit:
Ok, so here are the winners!
Really amazing entries this time around, and with the holiday spirit and all, well... we couldn't just narrow it down to four.
Thanks to everyone who participated! We really enjoyed seeing your interpretations of this month's theme.

Cool, and a bit unpredictable december competition theme, I did a tree house a few days ago. Now I just need to find where I put it :)

Wasker is right, this is very unpredictable. December should be Christmas theme, but for me it's totally ok.
Alex I would like to ask you a question. I was interested in doing some challenge work non-digital. I was thinking about entering with an image with puppets like in "Stopmotion", and I would submit a still. I have never done it before, so I would like to ask if this is ok has an entry to this competition, or if it has to be 2D or 3D Digital only?
You do have Sculpture DVD's, so... and I was really feeling the urge to try this out.
Best regards to all, and good luck!
Ricardo.

Any technique is acceptable.
So I tweaked the theme a little... a treehouse in winter. :)
that adds a little more seasonal relevance....

Cool book A.Alvarez, the design of the house on the cover is really nice. Looks like something worth picking up when I get some spare change ;)
I don't have anything that fits into this category ;) so that's gonna force me to come up with something specifically for this topic "which is a good thing" since I need more environment and architecture work in my portfolio. Plus, I love nature and trees are a great thing to marvel at.
Whenever I think of trees, Miyazaki comes to mind because of his love for great old oaks and large trees and nature which is evident in most of his animated films. "My Neighbor Totoro"
I don't know what the policy is as far as entering if you've already won once but I'd do it purely for portfolio reasons and motivation either way. I'm looking forward to what everyone produces for this. I guess I should get started on some thumbnails tomorrow.

OK, since I started working on it prior to the addition of winter to the theme, here's my tree house. It's still a WIP, but I thought I'd throw it in the mix right away while I'm at a certain point.

I was very excited to get to work on this theme. I was hoping the December theme would be unexpected and it was. I really enjoyed doing this painting and I can't wait to see all the other submissions. Every month I'm blown away by the level of talent I see on this forum, it is truly inspirational. I wish everybody luck in the contest and have a great holiday.:D

For this image I did a bunch of initial sketches with black and white charcoal on green painter's masking paper, which allows me to lay down a lot ideas quickly and establish my values. Also sketching out with charcoal, hopefully helps to give the image a bit more organic feel. After that I scanned it and painted it in PS CS.
Cool theme! I'll be sure to participate.
Is the deadline for this contest december the 31st?

Alrighty then. I'm new here but I have been lurking for awhile and of course there was this link posted by another member at imaginefx and well.....Wow, a monthly contest and a chance to win those awsome DVD's. It's worth a shot.
Good luck everyone and thanx to Gnomon for this chance.
Hope you guys like it.
I figured I would throw in something that still has that "Magic of Christmass" feel to it. Excellent challange. Loved doing this one if even just for the fun of it.

Tricky challenge indeed.. and good because it's more specific than the previous challenges. Most artists have a couple of enviromentals (ie. the november landscape challenge) lying around in the dusty corners of their hard drives but I doubt many have examples of snowy tree houses. Which leads to many works of the works submitted now are probably created exclusively for this competition.
As it should be in my humble opinion :)

Here is my entry produced in Photoshop with a Wacom. I designed this as a hi-tech lookout tower or den, emulating the features of a natural tree. I thought it was a nice departure from taking the brief very literally. Enjoy, and Merry Christmas guys

a great idea. This is the first time i will be entering a gnomon challenge. I am a bit intimidated because of all the great talent in here. I know i can't possibly measure up to a quarter of the beauty in all of the images but i would like to try because of the great topic.

I decided in a different direction with my tree house and made my piece where the tree is an actual house. This is my christmas tree house. You have the nutcrackers, the icycle bow for the door knob, the christmas tree mats, frosted windows, and yes, even diamonds and pebbles for the ladies. This all started from a basic drawing from nowhere and turned into this using photoshop 7.0 for the rest. I did the drawing about the third of the month and finally did the rest today. Merry Christmas everybody. I hope everyone enjoys.

Hi :) hope everyones' having a nice holiday.
It's very near the end of December now, so here's my entry.
Haven't done any real 2d attempts on computer, so i had a go with this challenge.
With all the Christmas warmth going on i decided to do the opposite: more cold and lonely image, it's called "abandoned memories - winter treehouse" ...painted in Photoshop. Hope you like it, Ta :)

Uff! I thought I wouldn't make it on time!
My first idea was to make a real wooden model for this challenge. But due to the lack of funding at the time I could only buy a small Bonsai tree, that was meant to be the base for the modeling.
Therefore I decided to change direction, and here is the outcome. I hope everyone enjoy it! It was very entertaining to do it. Best regards to everyone, and Happy New Year!

Here's my entry for the December contest. In keeping with the "any house" part of the instructions, I thought of a shuttle crashlanded at the edge of a huge forest on a cold, desolate world. It's been there for some time. Not every one made it through the crash or the years of harsh weather. In fact, there might be only one survivor left.
So maybe not such an upbeat Christmas theme, but it was a fun painting neverthless :)
Done in Painter.

Hmmm. My entry above seems to be clipped, and I can't reach the edit button to change it. It's no larger than some of the other entries, so I'm not sure why that's happening. The whole thing is there if I save it or follow the link back to the original. Any suggestions?

Edit: Well, it shows up in Firefox all right, so I guess I'm okay. Odd, as for some reason in my Explorer window it clips off about the right quarter of the image. Strange :)

It's really inspiring to see so many great contributions in so many different styles.
I went with a somewhat different approach (not alone on this one though as can be seen by Acrylicos post) and did a house inside a tree rather than outside one...
Mine's done as a mattepainting (in style with the horribly boring snow-less winter here in Sweden this year):
http://www.clint.se/mattepainting/treehouse-final.jpg
Here's the sketch that I based it on. I deviated quite a bit from it. It was drawn without reference and as a sketch it worked (kinda) but when I tried to finalize it it didn't look right at all.
http://www.clint.se/mattepainting/treehouse-sketch.jpg
Original photo of the main tree with the nice roots is by winterdove (Carmen Cordelia) from stock.xchng http://www.sxc.hu/photo/645392

Here an elf, banished from the kingdom for biting the reindeer, finds himself in a cheap, one room tree house somewhere in the middle of the polar wasteland.
Just as he finishes scaling the malformed trunk, and makes himself comfortable, a fleet of Prefabricated Parasitic Armored Acorn Attack Units from Outer Space start an invasion, claiming Earth as their own.
The elf, having lost his hat on a branch, and lacking any sort of hand to giant metal claw combat knowledge, bends over to holler down the the crude, cast-iron water closet pipe for the menace to please go away.
Spent most of the Holiday working on this, a few hours every day, jumping between zBrush, Lightwave, Photoshop, and Painter. Since its a mixture of 2d, 2.5d and 3D, all elements are frozen on a static canvas, and I cannot attach bones to animate anything, or rerender at HDTV rez, I'll categorize this as a 2D image.
For the full resolution (1474 X 2098), please click the image.
Phew.
Nice work in the contest again this month, in both 2d and 3d. Hope everyone goes goofy on New Year's, and has a safe and successful 2007. And paints lots of new contest pictures. :D

This is for anyone who wants to know how to display a decent sized image in their contest posts instead of posting a link (which until recently included myself.)
Go to cgsociety and set up a free portfolio. In their instructions they explain how to optomize your pic for the web and maintain its quality.
Upload your optomized image to your cgsociety portfolio.
Then, in your contest post, click the 'insert image' button (same row as Bold, Italic and Underline controls.... 5th button from the right.)
Copy/Paste the url from your cgsociety portfolio full size image link and you're good to go.
Thanks goes to 'msoutherland' for replying to my own call for help with this matter.

I designed my tree house on a alien planet. The trees are aquatic and float on the ocean. They have their own air bags filled with gas. During the winter they balloon themselves enough with gas to float in the sky. And use there large leaves to sail with. The wind they catch flies them all over the planet. While in the air they drop large seed that are attached to there roots. The large seeds fall from such a height that when they hit the ground they plant themselves several feet. The local people use the trees to carry there harvest and animals to other areas of there planet to sell there goods. They steer the trees by controlling the trees leaves like a sail. When spring comes they sail back home on there boats which they carried on the trees. In mid December I was thinking about what to paint, and this whole story or theme evolved while standing in long lines at the stores while christmas shopping.

wow.... I'm NEAR speechless. Congrats to all the other winners! Alex Kaiser's entry was my personal favorite as well. I love the crazy detail in his brush strokes and his palette. Some really outstanding other entries as well, I'm absolutely FLOORED to have taken 2nd place. This is a great end to a busy week as well. Thanks to Alex, everyone at Gnomon!

Awesome. I considered my entry a lost cause this time around, but thanks for the honorable mention by placing me among the winners! I don't think much makes a Friday morning brighter than a good cup of coffee, something else, and finding out you get to pick out more Gnomon DVD's.
:D :D :D
Congrats again to all!
