Welcome to the Gnomon Workshop community gallery contest...

We have launched a small forum to allow our community the opportunity to share their work. These are not critique or discussion posts, but purely the sharing of artwork produced via traditional or digital means.

Every month our producers will select four winners from the 2D, 3D and Digital Sculpting categories (twelve winners total), who will receive up to twenty-five Gnomon Workshop DVDs! (winners get to choose of course).

Rules:

Simply post examples of what you consider to be your most accomplished work in the forum thread. At the end of each month our producers will choose their favorite images which will then be announced in the forum. The first place winner will receive 25 DVDs, second place 15 DVDs, third place 10 DVDs and fourth place 5 DVDs. Winners will be contacted via the email address used at forum sign-up, the first week of every month.

Anticipated FAQ:

Q. What criteria are used to pick the winner? Well, this should not be seen as some sort of brutal competition. We love to see new artists emerge, and this seemed as a good way to give artists exposure, while rewarded them for their talents. The winners will be judged based on our producer's personal criteria.

Q. Who are the producers? Alex Alvarez, Travis Bourbeau, David Caplan and Ryan Kingslien judge the contests.

Q. Isn't it unfair that the people who need the DVDs the most are at the biggest disadvantage in this contest? Not true... we often award prizes to people whose CONCEPTS or IDEAS are excellent, regardless of technical execution. While first place tends to bias to a combination of concept AND technical merit, we often choose winners who show POTENTIAL.

Another question - are we supposed to post only stills, or is video (hosted elsewhere because of space constraints) accepted as well?

Hello.
Any 3D imagery is cool... characters, interiors, architecture... anything.
But just stills for now.

What are the preferred dimensions for the stills? What is the upload size limit - per image and total per user?

PS: Apologies if this questions was already answered somewhere else.

I saw one of the Gnomon DVD's at a buddy of mine's place and was really impressed. I have been using Max for a while now to study and want to switch the Maya PLE and it's going to take some getting used to. So I was looking today at what DVD's was available on the Gnomon website ans saw the forum. Winning a couple of DVD's to help kickstart the Maya learning will be a real boost. So expect to see some of my work soon. :D

Alex, have you given any thought towards your final point in the original post? In regards to it being a bit of an odd competition...?

Honestly, I would have no chance comparing to those who have entered so far; yet, they appear to need the 40 DVD's the least, whereas others who have less experience could put them to real use.

This isn't really the case. I don't see a problem on this issue.
For example, I am a fairly accomplished (self taught) CG artist, but I have little to no knowlege of maya, and want to get to know the program, so this prize would be just as useful to me as to anyone else.
A lot of the gnomon DVDs aren't really for beginners, but for people who want to get up to speed on a particular application.

I am a "traditional" sculptor (stone, bronze, clay) who loves painting on the computer. I have done a lot of work with Painter. I had tried a variety of modeling programs and was always pretty disappointed until Zbrush. I feel like I am really sculpting:D I model in Zbrush and finish the paintings in Painter.

Hi Alex, I'm trying to post my 3Dimage on September 2006 section, but I'm geting an upload error. I scaled and compressed my image to fit jpeg 39.1kb, and still geting upload error about dimension limits (1024 x 768). My original image size was:1100 x 804pix, and I scaled it at 658 x 900 loosing a lot of detail, and still that upload error. Other guys have uploaded images far biger than mine, how did they do that. Any help would be appreciated!...

hii, just wandering if we are aloud to use previously made models(3d objects) and incorporate it into a entry. Like I have a bunch of random things premade prior to the competition and depending on what the topic is put them together kinda like assemblng a sandwich... with all the ingredients prepared already. ^ ^" or is that a nono? (as in everything made from scratch from that month)

You can submit work from anything that you have done in the past. As long as its yours.

Ok, wait...are we supposed to post an image with the monthly theme or without? It seems like it would make more sense to have a separate thread for general 3D, but does it ultimately come down to the monthly theme being more a suggestion than a guideline?

More importantly though. If I have an entry for this month that does not fall in the "Unmanned War Machine" theme where exactly do I post it?

Hi Imhotep397 you just have to post it here. http://forums.thegnomonworkshop.com/showthread.php?t=1640&page=9
