So the winners have been selected...
Congratz to everyone who participated, as everyone really made us happy with all of the amazing entries. We will be contacting the winners via email.
Please don't try to read our minds on why we selected who we did... we tried to find work that was creative, imaginative, well composed, well lit, and that showed a lot of potential for artist growth. We also tried to strike a balance between work that looked utterly profesional, and work that was almost there. Trust me, part of me wanted to just give everyone a prize, but we unfortunately can't. I did however decide to add three more winners. Instead of the original four, we now have seven winners! Thanks so much for participating, and we look forward to continuing to see more of your work... it truly inspires and motivates us.
The October contest thread will be posted very soon. :)

i realy liked and enjoyed to work on this piece for soo much that for 3 days i didnt went to my job :D

i made 2 variantions of the picture

This one is one of the first colour Linography's i made.
"Oldies Show" 22x30 Linography over MDF
The concept was to create an poster for this classic Fiat 127 (one of my favorite old cars) based on the old race posters, and the the language of russian propaganda posters, this was the result. It was made with to separated lino plates instead of using masks, and printed in two fases over wood (MDF).
I made several changing the colours, this is one of the examples, maybe i post other colours to.
I love the results of this technic, and unfortunately its impossible to see the texture resulting because of the resolution.

This is also one of my first work in Silkscreen print.
"RIZHOME" 50x70 Silkscreen over MDF
The concept for this one was creating an cover for my final tesis. I tried to represent visually the rizhome concept. The work was made in several fases, after scketching i refine the forms in illustrator and photoshop, them i separated all the layers and create the photolith to "burn" the silk.
This work was a real pain, because with 3 layers i spent to much time finishing him, again i have several compositions and several colours, for now this is the example i will show (it was scanned, so when i have an opportunity to shoot him with a camera i refresh this image with a better one. Again you cant see the resulting texture but its fantastic, this is my favorite printing technic because we can use metallic effects and transparency effects.

My first Linography work
"BOMBS ARE US" 16x20 Linography over Cotton Papper
This was my first work (with beggining and a end) in Linography. The objective was to create an illustration to an newspaper, we choose an article free of choice with an image and develop an illustration for the image size, the contents are free. I choose an article about an suicide children that blow up in midle east, and the idea that this people have about being martir's, at a certain time there was an statment of a father, saying that is son with 9 years one day come to him and daid: "Dad, i want to become a martir, give me an explosiv belt."
So i work the issue with humour has you can see, and this was simply conceptual i dont play with serious issues such as these.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums. Here's a piece I finished recently for my portfolio. Conceptual art is something that I REALLY want to get into, as it offers so much more artistic freedom (even with set art descriptions) than what I'm used to having as an illustrator. enjoy :) I'm updating my post with a second entry as well.

This image was done a couple of months ago. It portrays the City of Boston after the cell phone anomally that rendered the city to a near appocalypse.
http://features.cgsociety.org/gallerycrits/226106/226106_1149817212_large.jpg
It has a photo base plate, 3D crashed plane, and everything else is photoshop painted.
I understand that this image is a little violent because of the times we are living with all those threats and security regarding airplanes. But this image was done to portray a scene in a possible upcoming movie called - CELL - Where an anomally brought wreck to all electronic stuff in this city.

Hi all together!
I would like to join these impressive drawings with my latest work. It took me a while to finish it - I had been lost in the details - especially in the area of the dragons head. The painting has been started with a black ballpoint pen sketch of the dragon (you may still see the lines there) about 6" in width on white marker paper. I had no idea about doing any concrete scenery, but when I had done the sketch and it came to rendering, I thought there should be some kind of background. I found a nice seaside picture with moonlight illuminating the clouds - it is still noticeable up in the right edge - and developed the rest from there. All the painting was done in photoshop using some custom brushes for the spray. I kept attention to constantly shift my colors - as been taught by Ryan in his great rendering DVD?s - and tried to avoid dodge and burn. Afterwards I have tweaked the image with the hue/saturation manipulators and others - maybe a little too much. Hope you enjoy it and would be happy to hear some comments.

This painting is of my dear grandmother who was overcome by Alzheimers disease. In this particular painting she is trapped in this hallway of electrical outlets and is unable and confused about which outlet to plug into in order to get her memories back. The other characters are my grandfather and a younger version of me standing beside her trying to help her the best we can.
I did an initial sketch with Nu Pastel on green painters masking paper for all of the characters, and I then scanned in the illo, and painted it with Photoshop CS. For the outlets I created one with Illustrator, and then in Photoshop duplicated the outlets to create a large tile, after that I copied the walls and scewed each one individually for perspective.

When I was small child living in Manila Philippines, my grandparents whom lived a very meager life worked the good part of the day. During this time, I was left alone to fend for myself, exploring freely my house and town. My grandmother to this day tells stories about how she would come home and find me sleeping in the most awkward, small and cramped spaces. My favorite place she said, were cabinet drawers.
I do recall slivers of those memories. I didn?t have any siblings, toys or many friends, so for fun...I locked myself in small, dark confined areas and imagined magical and fantastic things. I would play out stories in my head, wording out with conviction every moment. I did this...until I fell asleep. This is what I called "play".

I just want to say, that you guys at Gnomon are doing a kick ass job with all the DVD?s and this competition, you are one of the reasons that I started with concept design.

Hello Everyone, Cool artworks!!! I never knew how to do concept art until I viewed a sample video at TheGnomonWorkshop site by Carlos Huante... just a few seconds of it blew me away! I never knew that one can just play with the pencil until something is created. After that short clip I grabbed a pen and a post-it pad and tried it myself...the cheap way of course. Why draw them on this small pad, well since I work in security, it's the only thing I can fit in my uniform's pocket... along with a pen...this is also why I only draw the head..no room for the rest...but I hope to develop the bodies in the future. What I do is hide under a stairwell (shhhh) during breaktimes of course..:D and let the steps of the people above me become the sounds of my so called creatures which create themselves..It's funny how they really just come out...although at times they turn into..well just scribbles I have quite a few o this post-its...actually too many I decided to enter this contest because I will like to get a shot at some of these great free dvds since I can't afford them...well you already know why! Here's my second attempt at computer painting. I used photoshop and painted with a mouse. It was tough! I've read several times on painting tutorials on the web that I should have a Wacom tablet to paint with. I have never tried a drawing tablet before. I have to get my hands on one! For this image I wanted something bright! with energy! While I was painting this image I was imagining when I was younger going to the mall, and looking forward to looking at the posters at Spensors! Walking to the back of the store where everything is glowing from the black lights "I thought it was magical". I remember looking through the posters and being ahh!!!!! by amazing pictures of dragons, aliens, fairies, trolls, fantasy collages with wizards, mushrooms, and a penis hidden in the picture somewhere. Also the occasional farrah fawcitt posters and the never outdated neon marijuana leaf. This was my first taste of fantasy art. I wanted to create a picture that would fit right in with those posters. It's crazy but! I would be prouder to have my picture in Spensor's store across the nation than the Louvre. When I go to the mall I still look forward to looking at the posters at Spensors. But they don't have as much fastasy art its been replaced with almost nude chicks. Not that their's anything wrong with that!
PS. I was not aloud to have posters in my room. Because it did not match with the wallpaper and bed covers. Mom!!!! Ha!!! I was like 5!

I created this image for my niece for her birthday. She sings Itsy Bitsy spider all the time thats what gave me the idea. Its originally a 20"x 16" framed poster. It a photoshop file it took me around four days to create. I really didn't have a plan, I was constantly moving things around coming out with new ideas. I created the sun, clouds, spider, and water pipe. The flowers were stock art that I modified and adjusted the colors. then I added different types of textures to it.

I got burned out as a Art Director, working in graphic design field placing realtor's photos on a signs with texts. I just started painting on the computer. I was looking through Computer art magazine at local book store, and ran across ImagineFX magazine and I was re-inspired. I had forgotten how fun! it is to illustrate. I have been trying new tutorials that I have found on the web.

I wanted to create a space ship scene with a lot of color. And I thought long and hard what would be the most basic type of ship most likely to exist. It would have to be arrow dynamic with some type of rocket engine in the back. I would figure? I have been to some UFO sites that describe how " real " UFOs work with worm holes and nuclear antigravity engines, real complicated technology. I wanted the most likely possible space ship. This is what I came up with.

This is a self promotional piece I created for lisa frank stickers. They have their plant here in Tucson Arizona. Originally designed in Adobe Illustrator. When I converted the image to a jpeg it lost its smoothness. I hope it still has a little punch!

Another self promotional piece for Lisa Frank stickers. I wanted to show that I can create mechanical objects and translucive materials besides cartoon images. Also to show that I'm well rounded in drawing in Adobe Illustrator.

Hi all,
Very nice work here. It was a pleasure to browse through the thread.
Here's my contribution. It's title is 'Call Me'. The basic idea behind making the painting was that giving a child a mobile phone (/iPod/laptop/etc.) for Christmas doesn't make up for the parents' lack of attention and love.

After I heard about this contest two weeks ago, I jumped on my wacom right away and completed this illustration. It is about 7000 px hight. This is a great competition and I'm very impressed with the entries so far. I have actualy never seen so many great pictures in one thread! The second illustration is a piece I did earlier this year.

Hi there. In spite of the 3d sphere I think this will qualify as 2d Work, so this is what I have to offer:
the αναβάς (anabas)
http://www.phylax-computerkunst.de/ana_voll.jpg
Details:
http://www.phylax-computerkunst.de/ana_d1.jpg http://www.phylax-computerkunst.de/ana_d2.jpg
This was about the first piece of (digital) art I ever created. It was inspired by the philosophy of Platon and his notion of the "idea".
What perhaps makes this piece special is the fact, that its composed exclusively from microscopic photographs I took using an apparatus I built to connect my digicam to my microscope:
The background starfield is made from a cloud of bacteria shot with dark-area-illumination.
The sun was created from a paramecium's back(a sort of protozoa), which I altered a lot digitally.
The planet the figure stands on was rendered digitally as a polygonal object using 3ds max, where I textured a sphere with cells from an onion's thin skin.
The black silhouette is a fellow student of mine (who of course is not microscopic). I overlaid him with Erythrocytes (red blood cells)
The nebula in the front is a proteine structure found in sperm. The face in the nebula was created manually via vector graphics in Adobe Illustrator.
The final composition was done in Adobe Photoshop CS
Thanks for the contest and best regards
Phylax

Hello all...
