http://gnomonology.com/upload/tutorial_thumb/290/main.jpgDo you have find adorable things to be scary?* Me neither but Cesar Dacol Jr. has something different to say about it.* In Designing with Digital Clay: Evil, Cesar takes Linda Blair in the Exorcist and Chucky as inspirations for sculpting this evil child.
“Everything comes back to the nose,” Cesar says.* He notes that once he nailed the nose’s shape, the mix of cute and horror, then the sculpt fell into place.* Cesar points out how all the details of the face direct attention back to that nose.* The nasial labial fold, the corners of the eyes, the wrinkles.
Cesar also shares some of his experiences working with his mentor and legendary Make-up Effects artist, Dick Smith, back before he moved into the digital effects world.
In sculpting Evil, Cesar uses the following tools:
Clay brush
Rake Brush
Flatten Brush
Mesh Extraction
SubTools
Layers
http://gnomonology.com/upload/tutorial_thumb/290/1.jpgCesar starts with a base mesh that he downloaded from ZBrushCentral.* You can find the link at the bottom of this post.* This is the same base mesh he has worked with for most of his head sculpts.
http://gnomonology.com/upload/tutorial_thumb/290/3.jpgThen fairly quickly he blocks in the basic shapes of the head.* It is always interesting to me to see how people block in forms and you can see how Cesar keeps it very gestural for awhile and slowly lets the forms resolve themselves.
http://gnomonology.com/upload/tutorial_thumb/290/5.jpgOne process I found very cool was to create the hair by means of Mesh Extraction. Mesh Extraction allows the artist to use one mesh to generate another mesh. It is a fast way to create things like pants, shirts and hair.
Another thing I found very cool about this tutorial was how Cesar created the teeth. I will leave you to see the whole process in the tutorial but what I found most interesting was how he sculpted them in the base mesh of the face first and then recreated them as separate subtools.
