Ok everyone... time for the November contest thread.

This month's theme is the landscape.
Bear in mind that this doesn't necessarily mean 'earth' as seen by 'human' eyes.

Contest ends November 30th. :)

edit:

Ok, so here are the winners!

http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/alex_stuff/misc_forum_posts/GW_nov2006_winners.jpg (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/alex_stuff/misc_forum_posts/GW_nov2006_winners.jpg)

We added a fifth place as we just couldn't get it down to four again! :)
Mike Corriero, your submission is really amazing... ! For a sec I thought Christian Lorenz Scheurer had entered the contest. ;)

Congratz everyone... so much cool stuff. Dec contest coming soon...

I am certainly entering this one! Best luck to all.

Alex, we can enter with mattepaintings right? or it has to be digital painting only?

Kind regards,

Any technique/media is ok... if you do something that combines 2D+3D, then it is up to you whether you enter it in the 2D or 3D thread... all entries are voted on together regardless of media.

Just looking for clarification so that I can submit.

Thanks...

Hello everyone.

This is my first post on these boards. Gnomon make the best instructional DVDs and I can honestly say my switch from being a traditional to digital artist would not have been as pleasant without Gnomon!

On to the post...

My entry into the November contest was done as the cover for Rifts Worldbook 29- Madhaven published by Palladium Books. "Madhaven" is the name given to the haunted ruins of Manhattan.

The painting utilizes many of the techniques I learned from the Gnomon Workshop's DVD The Techniques of Christian Lorenz Scheurer Advanced Digital Painting in Adobe Photoshop? Volume # 2. The way Sheurer uses photographic textures in his workflow was really an eye-opener to me and I decided to try them out for this painting.

I based the concepts of some of the ships on mine dump trucks and agricultural machinery. I dunno it just seemed like it would help ground the concept in the real world.

My first image is a painting I did of my house. The second is a midnight drive on the town. You can see the building to the side on the porch steps along the way. You can also see that I made the building and porch steps and even the brick wall in the background out of a dog. My last one is in my backyard. We have a ditch alongside the road, and across that ditch is an old abandoned herby in the woods. I found this to be really throughout my life, so I made a portrait/painting out of it using photoshop, and pen. The only piece that has no touch up in photoshop, is the image of my house and driveway. Hope everyone enjoys!

This is pure Zbrush, I am still learning illustrations and this isnt complete.

I probably stand no where in front of so many great works out here, but this is my mere attempt to put in my 1% and my first entry on these sites.

I hope it relaxs the burning eyes of all the artists like me, who spend hours sitting in front of those contrasting monitor screens.....:p

next step - buying Gnomon zbrush illustration Dvd and giving all of you a run for coming contests ........ in other words creating better illustrations......lols ;)

You can find some of its process screenshots and techniques I have used on zbrushcentral.

http://i15.tinypic.com/47mw586.jpg

Ok after three days of hard work, this is complete .

I am posting two versions of it, one plain illustration and other with my comic characters (as we are allowed to post two).

The aim was to create a detailed atmosphere in zbrush in par with other rendering softwares as zbrush has no global illumination, yet preserving the cartoon look.

Post effects were done in photoshop.

Hi-
This image was done for an architect for an architectural competition. It is the Flight 93 National Memorial designed by Paul Murdoch Architects. It is one of the first digital paintings I have done and one of 12 pieces for this project. I was greatly inspired by the Gnonom DVD's and used a lot of tools and methods that were included in the lectures by Ryan Church, James Clyne, Harald Belker and others that I had at the time.
The proportions of the image are quite unusuall and the actuall size of the painting was 18,000x3,000 pixels. It was placed across the top of five large presentation boards. All painted in Photoshop.
It depicts an open land (former strip mine) in the shape of a bowl that is surrounded by a grove of red maples and a wall with a gate. The gate (vertical gap in the wall approx. 40feet high) is placed on the path of the aeroplane that crashed on Sept. 11th 2001 near the edge of the forest (on the left side of the painting). Your eyes are led either from left to right or right to left.
The atmosphere of this painting is supposed to evoke the mood that was the Memorial's design intent - "tranquility, beauty and silence".

i hope you like it even though it's not a science-fiction piece. it is something, however, that does not exist now but will exist in the future...
thanks for the opportunity and good luck to everyone!

Hi everyone,

This is my first post ever.

This is the first painting I did after breaking my right wrist and having surgery on it. I was unable to do anything for a long time and could barely sign my name without pain until a month or so ago.

This painting about four weeks old but I felt it would be good for this theme of landscapes.

Hi, I'm Rian. I had create this never exists landscape which will not be found in this real world. Fresh, harmony & nature feels it gives, and I had named it, the " World of Eternity ". This artwork is done by using Photoshop. And, I wish to share this artwork with all of you.

* Ps: Sky and river is fully painting, and the whole landscape is based on my own imagination & sketch it out. Then, start to create it by using Photoshop. (256x256) sized of 3mountain was used but the original size of this painting is 3560 X 1520.

Thank you.

this picture shows our world sometime... Nature and Human will be protect by a shield. Some old big buildings are reaching out of it.

The picture takes about 5 hours and is done in Photoshop and a graphic-tablet.

Some sketches done before, creating buildings and a feeling how the scene should look. ( Ink,Marker)

Here is my entry of a space scape (based on the Triffid Nebula) that I did as an experiment to teach myself to use Photoshop as an illustration tool. The entire image was created from a blank canvas, no photos were used other than for reference. I had a lot of fun with it and spent a long time on this piece. This is my first attempt using a Wacom Tablet. I love the flexibility that the tool allows. Please give me some feed back as I am pretty new to digital illustration and would love some critiques.

Thanks,

Hi Everyone at Gnomon,

All your works has been most inspiring and delightful! Whenever buildings get a little tiring for me, I turn to you guys so please keep up the fabulous work!

This was designed for a traditional architecture/skyscraper competition in which the proposal was for towers that "grew together to greater heights than any lone tower could ever reach". I felt that this proposal was more like a new landscape and the architecture as landscapers trying desparately to escape the land...

We will be selecting the winners over the next couple days and should be announcing the results on Monday or so. We've got our GW Live event this weekend so we will be a little swamped, but hopefully on Monday the winners will be decided. :)

Hi, every1 ..congratulation for all the winner and really tks gnomon give us this oppotunity to learn from master which is create a really good art work. may i ask a question, is about 1st runner.which program u r using to do the art work, and i found tht learnd from different master is good for student. ur style is totally different compare with ur other 3 pic. u have multiple way to express ur design ,really good job! ...bcos landscape for my understanding is just a environment , not a story telling like create a character to stand infront , from here i realise design is to be more creative and more story telling ..nice picture and keep it up every1. nice day/

Congratulations to the winners and everyone else who participated, there were some very inspiring entries. I am very new to this form of art and I have been learning so much just from simply viewing some of the pieces that are posted here. Thank you so much to the Gnomon team for being so generous with the contest prizes, I am sure that helps put some motivation into the participants.

Take care,

Dan

Wow, I'm extremely blown away and thankful. 40 gnomon dvd's? I'm speechless. Thanks so much to Gnomon and A.Alvarez. I don't know if I'm supposed to e-mail you A.Alvarez or send my address information somewhere or something if you could let me know. Congrats to the other winners and everyone who participated.

RianChen@- If I can try and answer some of your questions. This was done using Photoshop CS2, some rough sketches were done in pencil first and then scanned in and finished the image completely digitally using a wacom intuos 2 tablet and Photoshop.
The idea behind the image was a welcoming to the beginning of the end "The Construction of Hell" and contains various elements through out the environment. Including 7 hanging figures to represent the 7 deadly sins, the bitten apple representing the garden of eden, the construction and destruction of the buildings, ship wrecks and implosion of the sun and overflowing of the sky. A lot of this is done kind of subtly, also including the burning bush and a snake in the womb of the main character.

Thanks again,
Mike Corriero -

Mike,

Great work, I really like the Ancient Sanctuary. I had recently returned from Japan where I went to Nara and visited the Todaiji Temple which was obviously your inspiration for the piece. Once again, congratulations.

I would also like to thank Gnomon and Alex for these Christmas Gifts. These works were very inspiring, I love Cloudmover's concept on those buildings!

Gnomon is and will always be part of our history, when in the future, people talk about those 21st Century artists, and their art.

Best regards to you all.

See you in a couple days when the next challenge begins! Good luck everyone!

Ricardo.
